Default changing a diff

Hi,

How easy is it to replace a diff?

Is it a case of just loosening it off, disconnecting the prop shaft at one side and disconnecting one half shaft moving it to the side and disconnecting the other half shaft and dropping it?

How long would it take to remove one and fit one?

Cheers

That's a good link. The props haft bolts are a pain to remove, impact equipment required and even then it's hard to get straight on the bolts.

See page 15-9 of the service manual - apparently you need a ball joint remover...

You can unbolt the upper wishbone from the chassis if you don't have a ball joint splitter--not sure how much the alignement will change doing this though......

I did mine twice on my yellow S and remember it being pretty easy. As it was JDM all the bolts came out easily! This might not be the case with a UK car though! I'm pretty sure the bolts on the shafts could be a right PITA on my current one.... they look rusty!

I tried to change Budgie's diff once. Basically, I was trying to get the hub nut off by standing on a 5ft pole and jumping.

I knew it was time to stop when you watch solid steel look like playdoh.

Otherwise, removing half shafts is best done with a mate who can turn the axle whilst you are under the car.
