Default Check your Shafts

Whilst fiddling around under my S this morning I glanced backwards and noticed some loose bolts.

Every bolt on my prop shaft was loose, to the point several only required a quarter turn to actually come out.

Above is the bolt that caught my eye, by far the loosest.

I have never touched the prop shaft before and had nobody do any work on this area of the car.

Just a heads up for the rest of you.

Mike

I've taken a few prop shafts off and not one of them has been easy to remove, most requiring at least one bolt to be cut.

Must be the exception.

Every single bolt at the front abd rear parts of the shaft could be turned with ny fingers!

It must have been tampered with or something in the past? - very odd.

They are right bastards to get out, I've had the prop-shaft off/disconnected on 4 s2000's (various guises/ages) including my mates and never seen any loose ones.

Happened before with one of my S2000s that had a clutch replaced in the previous owners time. I noticed a noise, checked underneath the car and one had fallen off (gearbox side) and the metal spacer was clipping the prop making the noise. All others were loose. On advice from here it was thought they were never changed when doing the clutch change (Honda recommend changing for new). To get me out of a hole one the Irish members sent me one and i used Locktite to secure them all. It can happen though I check mine whenever the car is in the air now.

I had a similar experience whilst mapping a 400hp s2k, I was driving back to my workshop when I heard a (Ting) I slowed right down and crawled back the last few hundred metres, popped it on the ramp and noticed 1 bolt missing and 3 loose. Scared the hell outs me, locktight is the answer. It turns out they had previously been undone for a clutch change.

That explains it then, I had the clutch changed about 18months ago! - Forgot about that expenditure.

Christ I am surprised I never lost a bolt!
