Default Chewed o/s/r brake pad

Hi all,

I've just done my first track day, which went swimmingly, apart from tyre wear (unavoidable!) and strangely, my Offside Rear brake pads, which were fitted before Xmas, have gone down to the metal. The nearside still has about 3-4mm left, but the offside is completely gone.

I tended to stick to 5-8 lap sessions, leaving plenty of cooling down time in between, and I always came off if the pedal went spongy. Is it likely to be a sticky caliper? sticky seals? A dodgy pad?

Any ideas welcome. I'll be heading to Honda to get pads tomorrow!

Cheers
Chris

You'd feel some instability under braking if the caliper were fully seized; it may be time to clean it thoroughly & fit new pads.

OK, but I had new pads before Xmas, since when they've only done 3-4k miles! It was the uneven wear that was worrying me. I'll take it apart and clean well when I put the new ones in. I've not noticed uneven wear on the road, just today on the track day.

Thanks for your comments.

If the wear is that uneven and on one pad, sounds like the sliders are sticky on the caliper.

Copper grease the answer for the sliders? I'll hopefully get it off and clean on Sunday.

Absolutely not! Copper grease dries out and gums up the sliders. You need high temperature lithium grease for the sliders.

Well, I replaced the rear pads yesterday, after having found the sliders to be fine. It seems the inner pads had worn more than the outers and were down to the metal! The back of the discs are slightly scored, but luckily not too badly. So I make that about 30k miles' worth of wear in one day, yet the fronts are fine.

I really thought I was giving them plenty of time to cool down in between relatively short stints. Anyone any idea why they've worn so quickly? They were new before xmas, and had plenty of life in them before the track day.

How much difference in wear is there?

What can happen is that you overheat the fronts and they fade. Then the rears start to do more of the work and because the pads are so small they can disentegrate very quickly.

Nearside outer was ~2mm. Offside outer was ~1mm. There looked to be more of a difference when they were still fitted, but on closer inspection it was fairly even. Both inner pads were just down to the metal on part of the pad. I guess I must have overheated the fronts then, because the rears are sh@gged, as you can see!

So would a front upgrade help the rear pad wear problem? Pads/disc upgrade? Or does it need something more substantial? I've now used RBF600 fluid as well, so hopefully they won't fade from fluid boil as easily, just glazing.
