that's an understatement, he must have been in reverse.

The link above says

The powerful six-cylinder engine is a reliable until, whether with UK-market petrol injection (150bhp) or US-market carbureted (104 bhp) fuel delivery. The UK petrol intected version was de-rated to 125 bhp in 1973 by by camshaft alterations and revised fuel injection metering. These changes made the TR6 smoother and more flexible.

Was Clarkson using a USA spec TR6 car for the drag?

ahh, http://www.vtr.org/TR6/TR6-history.html

still, I don't believe for one minute that a TR6 would really beat an S in a straight line.

Agreed that an S should beat a 6 - See above Autocar data. Would a very bad start be enough to tip the balance?

0-60 6.2 vs 8.5
Standing Quarter 14.6 vs 16.7

He did that in Top 100 Cars too. A 1.6 Golf GTI MkI beating (among other cars) a Saxo VTS and a Leon Cupra Sport over a 1/4 mile. Er, no.

But the S2000 did nicely beat the Lotus Elise in the Top 100 video despite an appalling start....
