Default Corrosion

Hi, I'm looking to buy an S2000 (my first one). I've read elsewhere that JDM imports can be prone to corrosion - alloys and the underside of the car. Has anyone else had problems with this - and how can you spot potential problems when inspecting a car.

Thanks
Rob

Nah

In my experience of owning fours S's, undersealing two of them and looking under plenty of other S's including JDM's.

They all come out of the factory with the same (poor) anti corrosion coating under neath. Hence why I undersealed my current and last S.

If anything JDM's fair better (depending on when they were imported) as the don't have such wet and cold weather over there.

I find they tend to be better providing they are undersealed well when they are bought into the country, In Japan they dont salt their roads like we do here so rust isn an issue like it is here

Thanks guys. In some respects undersealing the car I'm looking at (a 1999 model with 76k miles on the clock) might be a bit too late.

This thread shows you where you can do something to stop problems later on

It's well worth injecting some cavities and areas like door bottoms with a product like Waxoyl

The oldest cars are eight years old and serious rust is preventable if you act now

thanks Gaddafi, that thread helps. The car I looked at the weekend had a lot of rust around the brake discs. This made me concerned because of an old Renault Laguna I once owned with a similar amount of rusting. Turned out that the whole underside was starting to go and would have cost me a bundle to fix.

Mine's had a good coating of Mobil 1 recently.

The brake discs go rusty in no time if it's been left outside and not used. So don't worry too much if it's just the discs.

my JDM wheels were perfect when the car was driving around for 3years in Japan.. not a single spot of corrosion...

I leave them at the back of a garage in the UK for one year.. and they look like they have caught small pox
