Thumbs up Couple of probs....does yours do it?

I've got three probs that I'm going to the dealer with tomorrow to look at, but all are intermittent....anyone else experienced similar issues?

Car is completely stock MY05 with 18k miles.

#1
I've got a seemingly increasingly frequent problem where pulling away in 1st gear is very difficult, the car hesitates really badly and sometimes feels like it's going to stall, I have to put the clutch in and release to carry on, or change into 2nd gear when the problem goes away. My old 02 car used to do this when it was very hot weather and I was in traffic, but this happens in the cold on this car.

#2
Have noticed that on tickover there is a noise that seems to be coming from the transmission that goes away as soon as I put the clutch pedal down, release the pedal and it comes back.

#3
Have also noticed sometimes when I engage 1st gear I get a clunk and the car kinda nudges forward a very tiny bit, again doesn't happen all the time.

TIA for any comments guys.

#1 The dreaded 'kangaroo'! It's just an ingestion of warm air built up in the air box (intake is right over the radiator) whilst the car is stationary, a blip of throttle will clear it. Many people have done many different things, cheap DIY to expensive (Spoon!) snorkles to cure it.

#2 You're right next to the prop shaft and gearbox and you can hear it, it's also normal.

#3 Yup, also normal. I kinda like it. It's a purposeful noise!

PS. Welcome, have fun!

By the way, seeing the Kona logo. 1st question will be 'which bike rack?'. Answer is usually Saris Bones. I have a Patriot/Boxxers and a Trek whippet bike, although you may find your bike use diminishes now you have an S!

Agreed, new MAP sensor should cure it.

I still get the occasional kangaroo if sat for a long time. But if it's happening regularly, a tap on the MAP sensore in the first instance and replacement if that doesn't work.

This noise comes from the clutch release bearing and is common on most manual cars. Nothing to worry about and if/when you have the clutch plate changed, you should always replace this part as well.

Sorry Mans Best, but

Noise from transmission with foot on clutch = CRB

Noise from transmission without foot on clutch, goes away when clutch pedal depressed = Input shaft bearing noise.

Some noise is normal, depending on the design of the box, especially as you are sitting right next to it, as Chris says above.

Easy way to check for bearing breakdown is to drop the gearbox oil and look for metallic particles. Silver/grey particles are a sign of bearing breakbown. Bronze/gold is wear from baulk rings and a small amount is to be expected. Any lumps big enough to pick up between your fingers are V bad news.

When you look for replacement oil, try searching the forum - there are a number of people who have used different oils from the OEM one to reduce transmission noise or to give a smoother shift.

Kangarooing sounds like the MAP sensor.

1st gear being a smidge reluctant happens on mine too, until it is warmed up.
