Default Diff Noise

Guys,

I've noticed over the last 6 months that the diff seems a bit whiney. I'm not sure if this is normal or now that I know it's there, I'm constantly listening at it and worrying too much.

Car is MY06 and has only just hit 30k, bought it at 22k and changed all fluids straight away. Diff oil used was Silkoline BOA90S as recommended by Opie, probably noticed the noise starting around 25K - changed the oil again at around 28K with Redline GL5 stuff but it hasn't got any better. Car isn't a DD so when it does get used it's driven pretty hard.

Only noticeable at low speeds <30 mph and it's louder decelerating than accelerating.

Probably also worth mentioning that I've sound deadened the front doors which has massively reduced road noise, I'm wondering if this has made the diff more noticeable. Also can't hear it when the roof is down.

Any thoughts?

Chris

My car is a MY03 with 101k miles and I notice differential/transmission whine. I test drove a colleagues MY04 with 28k miles before I bought mine and that sounded the same.

Cars make noises naturally, given my above experience I though it was just normal and so haven't worried about it - but more experienced and knowledgeable members are still due to comment

Probably about right.

Mine started to sing like a kettle, so I swapped diffs.

Second one started to sing like a kettle about a year later. I find the noise extremely tiresome.

A Sony DAB radio installation has cured it.

I never noticed it when I first got the car so can only assume that it's got like this over the last 10k. I'm used to transmission noises - my last mx5 toy had dog gears which were loud but in a good way.

I'll just try and ignore it until it dies!

Could be your tyres? I was running Toyo T1R which were good but as they got down to 2mm i thought I had a Diff problem. Changed the tyres to Toyo T1 Sport and the noise disapeared. What tyres are you running and are they nearly worn out?

I have a little whine too. Sounds like a supercharger is fitted (albeit a quiet one). Like you I can't hear it when roof is down, just when up. I had put it down to the air rushing past the roof in some way causing the noise. The bottom bot of the window surround seal gets trapped in the passenger window when the windows go all the way down and back up. Opening the door and closing it again cures this... but I know the little rubber bit is trapped because the supercharger just got bigger lol! Same noise as before but loads louder! Gets louder fast you go etc

Little worried the original noise could be the diff now! Oh well, will worry some more when it goes bang lol.

Same here! I've just been reading the Squeak has a whine thread. I'm gonna pop to a gearbox specialist on Saturday morning and they are going to have a listen.

Check also the wheel bearings. It happened twice here in Greece people to have a whine which missintepreted to diff wine and it was actually comming from failling rear wheel bearing.

Other than that also check what TangoVTEC said. It can also be one of that. It seems strange to have a diff wine at a so little miles diff except if the previous owner really was giving hard time on the car
