I thought the limit of the car was 150mph in stock form - part of the reason i won't change my final drive.

That said, at 140mph, a lot's going on.
When fitting a different final drive you wire in a Yellow Jacket or Yellow Box to intercept the gearbox signal and to modify it so that the speedo reads correctly. This modified signal can be fed into the ECU. Therefore there should be no problem, unless I'm overlooking something?

I saw 156mph (on the GPS) in my stock S2000 along a gentle downhill stretch of autobahn... the speedo was reading in km... 262...?

So, no limiter that I am aware of...

156 speedo is still less than 150 real. I've seen 161 indicated that was less than 150 gps.

if there was going to be a limiter it would be done on the readout of the speedo - so you'd never see more than 150mph.

That's why alot of Jap imports use a MPH convertor - it basically means that the speedo reads in MPH, on the same gauges as Stock - hence your readout never gets up to the 190 odd mph that the car thinks it's going. it's basically just a resistor for the signal.

There's no reader - I saw 155mph indicated on sat nav (on a piece of private runway - naturally)

I've had 155mph with about 1000rpm left to go before running out of straight, not tried it with GPS though.
