6+ hour job to replace a timing chain? Sprockets wearing out? Doesn't bode well when they start to put some miles on the clock then

The sprocket has spun round a huge number of times by the time you get to 100k miles, so it's bound to experience some wear. I had mine changed as a precaution given the chain and guides were being done anyway (I also had a baffled sump fitted as that has to be removed too).

It's certainly something to bear in mind when purchasing. It's worth remembering that this was a £28k car new, and so some jobs are going to cost.

I guess so,

I wonder if anyone has tried/looked into uprated ones such as this?

There's a thread about the Toda tensioner here https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/850...eavy-duty-tct/

Also see this thread about the costs of making replacing the chain and guides. https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/865...ct-playing-up/

Quick update...

Had a call from ABP saying they have had a quick look and it seems that the piston(s) have definately contacted a spark plug(s)! Not to sure if they just removed a plug and came to that conclusion or actually took the head off but im heading over there this afternoon so should be able to get a proper update.

This makes me think that the initial diagnosis of the chain skipping a tooth or breaking altogether is wrong. It now points towards oil starvation which is odd because it doesnt tend to use much oil at all, and was topped up the day before. Has anyone heard of the oil pumps on these engines failing???

Will try to post pics when i go and see it later on.

Cheers for the advise guys.

Matt

How would oil starvation cause a spark plug to hit a piston?

Bad luck mate.

Why not put serving rarer in instead of the f20?

Something like the V8 LS2 or the 2jZ-GTE out of the Supra?

In fact, unless the con rod broke or the spark plug was the wrong type, how can a piston hit a spark plug!?

Valves I can understand, but spark plug!?

This thread has pretty much made me poop my pants!
Mine has covered 102,500 and doesn't burn much oil either. Regularly serviced and maintained etc. Just had the MOT done today and the valve clearances need doing so making a noise. How long does the actual timing chain last? TCT seems reasonalby priced but the whole thing at 6 hours labour costing £1k seems uneconomical on a 102k engine!

I suppose around those sort of miles, replacing oil (and water) pumps wouldn't be a bad idea.

Failing that I'd probably want to install an oil pressure gauge to at least check its doing its job and hopefully catch it if things start to fade gradually.

Mines only done 50k but I'm already paranoid about how long it will last for after reading this thread
