Default Engine fault light

A couple of times today about the VTEC point I've had the engine fault light flashing. Each time I wasn't accelerating that hard so I'm not at all sure if the VTEC happened or not, but I'm guessing that it probably didn't. I did use VTEC lots of other times on the same trip, and it was fine.

I checked the oil before going out, and the level was a fair bit above the H mark (Honda did this). Is it possible that too much oil stops the VTEC working?

Is there likely to be a fault code stored if the fault light just flashes? I always thought if there was something to read, the light would stay on (happened to me once when I spun).

Was it flashing? If so that is generally bad and you should pull over straight away.

Too much oil doenst stop VTEC, but it can be unhealthy in terms of circulation / foaming etc...

I understand flashing generally means a misfire, which explains the relative lack of performance when it happened. And a misfire can kill the cat.

I thought Honda were meant to make reliable cars? I've only driven it 3 times since the clutch problem was fixed.

AFAIK a misfire is the only thing that will cause it to flash - due to it being quite a bad thing for Mr engine.

Ian is right in that a misfire on cylinders can be indicated by a permenant CEL.

Im not actually sure what the ECU needs to see from a misfire, for it to decide whether it needs to flash or not.

I shall find out though.
