Default Engine Management Light

Good evening all

Over the weekend the engine management light came on along with the ABS light on MY 02 plate S2.

Having the car check tomorrow at my local garage to see what the problem is, as it appears to be running OK. Car splutters a little at idle, but nothing to bad.
Pulls and breaks like normal.

Car has just had new discs and pads all round and a oil change, with normal filters.

Has this happened to anyone before?

Spoke to a friend of mine who suggested to disconnet the battery to reset the computer and check whether the EML comes back on after little use!

Still getting the car check though, as it's not costing the earth to plug her in for a check.

Don't pull the fuse or disconnect battery until you've had the codes read because that clears them from the memory. If you're getting the codes read while doing that they would usually just press the reset button for you.

You say it brakes normally have you also tested the ABS?

Not unheard of for ABS pump to play up or an ABS sensor wire to get snagged by a clumsy mechanic.

Sorry to be a bit dim, but how do you check the abs?
Not really been pushing her, as the new pads and disks apparently need bedding in for around 400 - 500 miles.
Most I've pushed is to 5,000rpm and been smooth on breaking.

For testing ABS find a straight empty stretch of road where you can safely brake very hard, you don't need much speed. If you feel the brake pedal vibrating that is the ABS system pulsing the braking force to the wheels. If you lock wheels and skid to a stop then ABS is not working.

Cheers.
Just before I pop home and check, will the brakes fail if the abs is not working??

Don't want to hit them hard only to find out I can't stop!!!

If it is an abs issue, is it a costly fix?

no, the ABS system is fail safe, It will still stop you assuming the rest of the braking system is OK. Hence having warning lights

If your worried by this Take it to a garage.

Thanks for all your help.
It's going into the garage for checking tomorrow, so fingers crossed it's nothing serious.

Car has been running sweet, so gutted that the EML and ABS light came on yesterday.
