Mines a 51 reg and ive been trying to find out which code reader is best to buy. Something similar happend to my car and it turned out to be a coil pack, i was able to "limp" it to a honda garage down the road.

If anyone can recommend a good code reader for a pre facelift car that would be great.

I use a paperclip. But that only works if you have a JDM. I've got one of those bluetooth dongle thingies too.

The code will just be "misfire", with a cylinder number which may or may not be right. It's not going to say "replace coil pack #2".

This morning my engine management light came on, it is flashing rather than permanently on. After looking into this, someone on this forum has said DO NOT DRIVE IF FLASHING.

Any ideas as to why? Am I about to foot a big bill?!!
can you not detect a misfire?

chances are it's a plug, coil pack or an injector but it could be worse - compression for example

code reader will tell you which cylinder the misfire relates to and an indication of the source of the problem

A misfire is usually a constant cel. Flashing means stop usually.

It might have lost a sensor input; anything really. It's all just guesses from here.

Given the cost of a new engine, it's not worth taking the risk.

Is that definitly the case with the S Gary?

On several cars I have found the flashing light is evidence of the misfire and a warning to get the car checked and that the light stops flashing and stays on after a predetermined number of cycles with the repeat fault.

Not saying you're wrong - just wondering if the S is as above

Constant or flashing - it certainly means get it checked pdq!

On the S2000:

constant CEL means get the car checked as soon as possible

a flashing CEL means stop immediatately and do not drive anymore, get car recovered to garage.

Chris.

I've had various CEL lights on mine and have a scanguage in place most of the time so the times I've had coil packs go etc, its been a constant cel. Same with faulty O2 sensors.

As Chris says, the manual says to stop if its flashing.

I've been very fortunate in that I've never seen a CEL lit on any of my other cars so I'm not really sure if that's usual.
