Default A fond farewell to S2000 ownership

Well the time has come and after 3 S2000's over 11 years I sold my S2000 2-3 weeks ago after deciding that I really should try something different.

Its been a great experience and they are great cars hence why I have had 3, I only did 600-700 miles a year in my last S2000 and it was a waste having it sat in the garage, it was bought by a local guy who hopefully will cherish it like I did and will get lots of enjoyment out of it.

A great S2000 ownership journey! If anyone reads this and fancies a good guide to a good example of an S2000 then look no further than: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/uk-irela...miles-1209640/

Onwards and upwards as they say, it didn't take long for me to decide on a replacement for the S2000, it had to be a convertible, RWD, good handling and fitted with a great engine so I have ended up with a 981 Boxster GTS as a replacement.

Thank you all for the great S2000 community spirit and I will be hanging around like a bad fart no doubt!

Ah, finally torn yourself away! I'm starting to think about something different too, but it's really hard finding something that ticks all the boxes. Will be interesting to hear how you find Boxster ownership. Hope it's a good one!

I’ll certainly keep you posted on how I get on with the 981. From all the reviews and the brief test drive it’s epic and simply on a different level to the S2000 - which based on the price alone it very much is!

I have been eyeing up 981’s for a while as a replacement but couldn’t let the S2000 go but after driving a friends 981 Cayman S for a week the deal in my head was done and all I needed to do was to get into a position to afford what I wanted which was the GTS.

Nice! They are certainly a price bracket or two up from the S2000 these days. Funny to think they were an expensive equivalent when they came out!

I don't know much about the various years/models of Boxster, as they've never really tickled me. But then, I've never driven one!

Well its been 10 weeks since I picked up the S2000 replacement and I can report that in those 10 weeks I have covered 2200 miles (I did 500-700 miles a year in the S2000) and all those miles have been completed with a smile on my face, its simply brilliant, although having the GTS is a very much nice to have in terms of styling I suspect that the standard 'S' model will be just as good but without the premium cost wise.

I am a massive fan of the S2000 however I haven't regretted at any point selling it and moving onto the 981. The chassis on the 981 is simply on other level to the S2000, the feedback and confidence it gives is something that the S2000 lacks in comparison. There is very little I miss from the S2000, I still love the 9k rpm and the gearbox of the S2000 but the noise from the flat 6 makes up for it.

Having taken it on a track day (Oulton Park) I was very surprised how it performed on road tyres (GY F1's) and standard brakes, it was a few seconds a lap quicker than my previous cars (205 GTI6 on ITB's, Megane R26 and S2000) - I was expecting the brake to have boiled and the tyres to have melted.

I have had a few people message me directly asking how the 981 compares, the only thing I can say is that if you're considering making the jump then I would strongly recommend it.

The one thing that I do miss with the S2000 is the MPG.........the 981 loves its 99ron a lot more than the S2000 did and its a painful 15-18mpg average on a spirited drive whereas the S2000 was around the 22-24mpg in the same driving style.

I'm scared off Porsche by the reliability stories but I did a driving day once years ago and the Boxster S was a very capable thing..

I reckon this will cost 3-4x what the S2 did to run, not to mention buy so direct comparison is a bit spurious really
