Not on my '02 model. My mate Paul's UK spec '00 model does need the clutch in to start though.
Could it be an '02 revision ?

My UK '00 doesn't need the clutch to be in, in order for it to start.

Strange! My '00 doesn't need the clutch in to start!
I was taught to dip the clutch on starting anyway, and I'm now so brainwashed I just do it automatically.

Oddly enough I was told the Fiesta had to have accelerator and clutch out to start as its diesel.
Accelerator should be out - but it works fine even if you don't put the clutch out
