Fuel light

I've done 50 miles with the light on (looking for V power) also have you noticed you have more fuel going downhill rather than up? Yes it's a crap gauge, good job they don't use them on aircraft!
And for the totaly anal amonst us-
1-Before a long steady run, fill the tank to the brim.
2-Zero the trip.
3-Have a notepad and pen to hand.
4-Drive.
5-Each time a bar goes out write down the mileage.
6-Repete 5 until the car stops.
7-call the AA explaining what you have done.
8-Whilst waiting for recovery (and bill) draw a graph explaining the non linear nature of the gauge.
9-As soon as possible post graph on this forum, await flameing.
10-Get a life and stop worrying.
I must point out I've not attempted this myself, and am not resopsible for the results if anyone does.

From my own research and averages I have concluded that the light appears when it thinks there is 10L left in the tank, I say thinks as yes it does vary depending on the angle of the car.
From my own driving this 10L should be good for 100Km (62M) as I get about 10Km/L (23.5M/G). The most I have ever pushed it after the light coming on is about 65Km (40M) which resulted in a 47L fill after 520Km (323M).

We could turn this into a contest, see who can get the maximum fill in litres (scans of receipts needed and no cheating with the 4x4 !)
how low dare you go !!
Of course I accept no responsibility for the conseqences....
And thanks Simon for answering my original question

A few times now I have got in the car to go fill up with one bar showing! Driving out of camp and the last bar goes.. .. Its 17m to the closest shell garage for me and I havn't run out yet.
The firs time was scary stuck in trafic....
I have also noticed the S recalculating the bars as it will show no bars but by the time I get to the front gate and the motor is warm I get one back.

I noticed that the tank seems to empty at a quicker rate from the half full mark, the bars extinguishing at an alarming rate. I was once told it is something to do with the shape of the fuel tank.
When local driving rather than a longish journey I ALWAYS top up as soon as the tank is half empty.

few days ago last 2 bars disappeared like in 5 km and fuel light was ON.
i drove ~50 km on highway with top down at ~120-130km/h imagining stalled engine and waiting for resque service
but when i got to the gas station 45 liters went in.
which means i still had 5 literes in the tank

3 days after getting my S it was back in the dealer to look at the fuel gauge.
The previous day I went for a long spirited drive, when I got back I saw that I still had about a 3rd left according to the gauge, at the time thought not bad economy considering all the vtec'ing I'd been doing. The next day on the way to work I notice the fuel light is on and no bars!
Dealer had the fuel tank out but found nothing wrong.
Another incident, I drove the 3.5 miles to work with 2 to 3 bars (intermittent), crazy I know, and parked on an incline with the nose down. Come the end of day the car doesn't start! so I let it roll a few yards till the ground was level and then it started. It was a very gentle drive to the nearest garage...
