Happy New Year everyone,

I am still waiting patiently for my MY04 to arrive in about a week. Having driven a diesel car for the last few years I'm not really up to speed on the different sorts of unleaded petrol available and what will be OK to put in the new S when it arrives.

There are a number of Shell stations around here that sell 'Optimax' - I guess that is OK.

Most of the really close petrol stations (Esso in the main) only sell regular unleaded... would this be useable in an emergency?

Tesco sell 4 Start LRP - I'm not sure if this would be OK in the S?

Thanks for any advice!!

You'll be fine using 95 RON unleaded if that's all that's readily available - the engine has been tuned to run on it from MY02 onwards.

That said, most people do agree that there is a perceptible increase in performance if you use 97 RON Super Unleaded or, ideally 98.5 (ish) RON Optimax.

There are a number of threads discussing the relative merits of various fuels. Optimax is used by most on here, but there is a minority which prefers BP SUL. It's horses for courses really - SUL will always be better than UL.

My only other suggestion would be to steer clear of nasty dirty manky horrible supermarket petrol!

I have to use normal unleaded most of the time, doesn't seem to cause any problems. On the occasions when I have put Optimax in the low speed running does seem to be smoother.

For a while I have been using mostly Esso 97ron but I recently discoverd that one of my local'ish BP statons is now selling Ultimate so I am now using that.

My nearest Shell garage is quite a distance away so I don't often use Optimax.

4 Star LRP would be no in the S.

Optimax all the way. Avoid LRP as its lead replacement petrol. Am also tempted by the new BP stuff but its more expensive than Optimax around here.

I have to admit I only ever put Optimax or BP Ultimate in my S.

I find Optimax gives more "aggresive" power at low end and can be a bit snappy. Like a terrier if u will.

I find BP Ultimate smoother at low end but with the same punch within VTEC.

BP Ulitmate is more readily available than Optimax it seems.

Happy motoring dude

Is it worth just using that then?

I have to say I'm not sure I'd be able to tell any performance differences. I use Optimax in the hope that there will be less crap build-up in the engine.

No idea. I never look at the price.
