Default Gears and MPG

Chaps, I have a long journey tommorow and I'm wanting to get the best MPG out of the S.

How do you drive/rev's etc to get the best MPG???

As we know an S with a different FD sits highier in the rev's. Though I guess its not much different from driving an S with stock FD??.

What technique/How do people drive to get the best MPG?, i was always taught to drive with the car without 'labouring' it, and obviously not booting it . I tend to sit in a highier gear with the different FD.

Ta

I found that on long journeys I would spend more time in Vtec and as a consequence the car would drink petrol to give me ~ 180 to 190miles to the tank.

Vtec shouldn't operate under crusie conditions regardless of engine speed.

Higher consumption will be due to higher engine friction because of higher engine speeds for the same vehicle speed.

if you change final drive then that will mean for any given mph in 6th you are reving higher than standard so depending on the ratio and speed you call crusing its possible the engine will be above 6k and on the big cams
so with a changed final drive you have to be going slower mph wise for the same economy, theres always a trade off

i dont think i am wrong Vtec happens above 6k full stop its not dependant on anything but revs

I think you need to be above 6k *and* have a certain amount of throttle for vtec to engage.

Far more important for economy is anticipation and not accelerating/braking, this is what causes bad mpg.

Look ahead, you "know" that guy in the middle lane is gonna pull out as he's catching the car ahead of him, so slightly ease off and then by the time you catch him, he'll be ahead and back in middle lane. carry on booting it up to him, brake then wait for him to pass then accelerating back up to your speed will do no good for your economy.

Apart from that, keep it smooth, keep revs between 2/4k, pref changing at 3k, keep at 60ish and so on.

An average of 60mph where you go down to 50 or up to 70 is gonna get far better returns from getting the same 60mph average speed where you go between 30-90 all the time.

Thanks mate. Generally i sit at about 3500 rpm which is about 65-70 i cant remember :s

Most this stuff i do, i think the most i have had out of a tank is 300miles.

If I got 33MPG out of this (pictured) on a long run...I am sure the S2000 should be able to crack 40MPG on the motorway (roof up of course). Still, the S2000 isn't turning over at 1350rpm at 70mph, either!

I take the 118d on long runs, 70MPG possible if you stick to 60MPH.

As said above, it is all about anticipation, a light right foot and (safely) drafting as and when you can.

Pretty sure VTEC engages purely on Revs; keeping the Civic at 80 is impossible; it's exactly 4,500, so it races off down hill and nearly stalls uphill.

I usually set the Prelude's cruise at 4,450, but there is a (n American) school of thought that I should set it at 4,550, since the breathing is cleaner with more valve and less butterfly. That sounds highly suspect (vice versa; like the R18's DBW which gives WOT a lot of the time ought to be better) to me and 4,500's actually too slow to hang around at for long.
