Default Hard Wiring USB

Hi,

I want to “hard wire” the USB connection I use to charge my phone. I’m currently running a cable from the 12V Aux socket, and I want something a bit neater without using the socket.

First off – I presume I’ll need to step down to 5v, is there a product I can buy designed for this purpose or will I have to get something to change the voltage and then wire the USB into that?

Secondly – I need at least 1000mA to power the phone sufficiently when using it for sat nav. Preferably I’d like 2000mA, but I don’t know if this would be possible?

Cheers

I bookmarked this a while ago in case I ever needed to make one - never got around to it but it does answer some of your questions.

Cheers, a quick scoot on eBay suggests I can buy them premade. Although I'm not sure I want one for £3 from China

Seems like China seems to be the best place to get hold of one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271204565730

Thoughts?

I'm looking for suggestions too as I bought this adapter from a Chinese ebayer and my Nexus 4, despite indicating is charging, is not getting enough power - the battery level continues to deplete when I'm using the Nexus 4 as a satnav unit.

I'm tempted to buy an accessory socket for £2.99 from Maplin and to wire that to the fuse box (with an inline fuse). I already own a (reliable) 12v USB plug (something like this) which I can plug into the socket (then run a usb cable to the Nexus 4).
