I would stay clear of anything Francais!! They are rubbish.

The usual contenders.. Focus old shape going very cheap, Astra new one not bad.. Golf New shape expensive though.. Last model Civic a good car... Seat Leon driven the new one in TDI quite liked it.

I'd say Focus or Civic.

Even if Focus spells something rude backwards they are still quite a good drive! ;-)

What about an Audi A3?

the A3 Sportback is the 5dr version..

my wife has had one for past 18months - very happy and refuses to change it to something else.

In the right colour and spec.. very easy to sell on at a good price.. the fords are good to drive, but often heavily discounted and plenty in the rental market which impacts the 2nd hand prices.

Yeah but you could pick a 2004 Focus up for 6k or less for cash.
Or a new shape 2005 05 Astra for same.....

Cheapest to run and insure amongst its peers too IIRC. For 6K it will come with plenty of goodies..

A bit more will get you into a 6 month import from Trade sales / Motoropoint places...

Thats what I first thought to post, thinking of selling the Mini and getting the
new 170 ps TDI.

Far and away the nicest of the bunch to drive is the Focus. Whilst the styling isnt terribly exciting, it feels very solidly built, interior materials are very nice indeed and it really is a very, very good car to drive. The controls are well weghted with a nice feel to steering, gear change and suspension. As Nick mentioned, some of the competition feels down right nasty by comparison (chiefly the French and Italian cars you have wisely excluded - I had a Stilo once - what a cringe inducing heap of shit that is!!!)
Thanks for that vindication!

The press always said what a good car the 307 was.

Bollocks - it did everything far worse than a Civic, let alone a Focus. Control weighting? Not a bloody clue!

The 306 was vastly superior in its dynamics. Pity Peugeot forgot they made it already.

They is lying khants the press!
