Default Help to Diagnose a Potential Problem

Our resident ringmeister from Jersey, Ben Hampton, is actually at the nurburgring right now.. and has a possible problem with his car and could do with some feedback/opinions on what it could be..

this is the info I have from Ben via telephone..

car is driving OK..even upto 70mph.. until he uses the accelerator behind half throttle when he gets a strong vibration..that he feels is mechanical..as opposed to the engine misfiring. It can happen in any gear..and basically any speed..just when accelerating. He has checked the wheels/balanced etc.. unfortunately Honda in germany is closed.. as you can imagine what they are all doing.

any thoughts ideas..please post here.. and I will pass onto Ben.

I will post on UTH also.

Sounds like a problem I had, turned out to be a worn Drive shaft/CV joint

any of the Propshaft or CV joints are strong contenders.

Also worth checking the exhaust is secure and no little holes. Often these can lead to a resonance at certain back pressures which can induce quite a strong vibration.

Diffn gearbox and engine mounts all worth a check as well.

Check also for cracks in the manifolds.

Anything else does not bear thinking about but obvoius checks for oil in the coolant, elevated temperatures, etc all make sense.

If it's vibration felt under hard acceleration, then the likely candidate is worn CVs. A temporary fix / test can be done by swapping the CV joints over - you'll get the vibration in reverse then.

All of this based on recent s2ki research due to experiencing similar sounding problems.

There is even a TSB.

EDIT: lots of threads about this - seems fairly common in the US.

thanks for the replies.. I have already started texting Ben..

is this something he can drive home with if he takes it easy.. i.e. it won't make the damage worse/cost point of view ~ i.e. hundreds of miles..?

If it were me, & the symptoms sounded like they matched CV joints, I'd risk it - just keep the power down.

If it's CV joints, the parts that wear are replaced in their entirety, so doing more damage to these is not a problem.

CV joints / wheel bearing / brakes dragging.

Take it easy but 'should' be safe to drive.

He'll still be at the Ring. (With no internet access).
