Default Help Please... "Alien thing" found on me shock absorber!!

peeps

Am venturing onto da "proper" side cos need some advice. I posted a few months back moaning about a noise on the left side of the car near front wheel, like a clanging noise, there were suggestions about wheel bearings, brake pads locking and stuff. Anyway Honda couldnt find anything and said they just "freed it up" and "lubricated" it, whatever "it" was

anyway tis now colder and the noise is getting louder, it occurs when I turn the steering left or right and move away rather than at higher speeds, also happens when I brake or do the hill start thing (not that am crap at clutch control I am just testing when it makes the noise so I can demonstrate it to the honda peeps)

ok so this morning I took me baby into Jagman and he popped it on the ramp and the 3 of us (the other mechanic too) had a good nosy, they was no obvious leaks or excessive lubrication, we moved the wheel about and stuff, shone a light and he looked at all the "bits" (yeah highly technical I know) and compared them to the drivers side and the only thing that looked a bit odd was this "thing" which was on the left side shock absorber spring thing sort of interlocked with it

anyway it is a hard plastic thing, bendy too. you can see where the indents are this was where it was round the spring.

I am taking me baby to Honda on Tuesday morning so would appreciate some guidance and whether I should kick off, is it normal, what does it do, blah blah

Thanks

Pinkie

Oh er!!!! Pinky I am 99% sure that is a 'spacer' - it is put in at the factory to limit suspension travel whilst the car in in transit to where-ever it is going to be sold. These should be taken out by the dealer as part of the pre-delivery preparation. It being there is a big no-no - it basically stops the suspension working properly and hence is potentially dangerous - check the other 3 corners and see if its aliens chums are hiding there. Then phone your dealer and give them absolute hell.

(Sholdnt be any long term problems caused, but still worthgiving the dealership stick for selling you a car in unroadworthy/unsafe condition).

I think that's a spring spacer.

They are fitted to each spring during shipping to prevent suspension damage.

They should be removed in the PDI before delivery to the customer.

This is NOT good, but far from uncommon.

Defo worth seeking more than a grovel frfom the supplying dealer.

thats what Jagman thought too!! Thanks guys I bought the car from Warrington but have had it serviced for all of its 32500 miles at Altrincham including the bus incident and all the other times it was there (cos I a fussy mommy/customer)

ok so I should kick off with Warrington cos they did the PDI but surely Altrincham should have spotted it especially cos I complained about a year ago that is has a wierd noise on the left side!!

Oh I am SO gonna enjoy this...

Yeah its Savoy although they been bought out now and I think its Rylands, dunno and dont care its the same people working there and they gonna get

Thing is we didnt check the back only the front so am worried now if there is some there too and thanks for the link Ian, tis a common occurance I see

The other thing is both front tyres have excessive wear on the inner rims but both back are wearing perfectly evenly? Only changed em after me Don Palmer day in September!

You are very welcome Pinkie - pleased to help.

Whilst it is a relatively common occurance in the US, this is the first time I have heard of the problem 'over here'.

The linked link...if you know what I mean....has details of how to spot the critters lurking - I would find a torch and have a delve about if I was you.

I think you have enough evidence to read the riot act at them and demand compensating for loss of enjoyment / threat to your and to other road users lives...............let us know how you get on.

will do, was thinking that could play on the old impedement of enjoyment and stuff, I mean seriously though if I had to brake hard then surely with the left shocker not having as much play/bounce as the softer right then wouldnt that mean it would pull to the right?

They will have the car for 2 days so I am going to make them go over it with a fine toothcomb, full valet and 4 wheel alignment too and I am gonna try for them to replace both front shockers seeing as one will be softer than the other yeah I know I wont get that but if I ask for the earth then they gonna give me something halfway arent they!! Naturally will write to Honda UK about such an outrage
