Hesitancy on acceleration
Hi there,
I'm new to the forum and would like some guidance please.
Just bought a '56 plate S with 19k on the clock. Very happy with the car and makes me enjoy driving like I'm 17 years old again!
The car is in great condition and completely unmodified.
I have noticed that when I accelerate hard in 2nd gear from about 2-2.5k rpm the car will start to pick up and then at about 3k rpm it will pause to 'think' about before pressing on through the rev range and then moves through the rev range smoothly. For example on motorway, slow rolling traffic, 2nd gear, 2.2k rpm, everyone hits the gas and sprints off and I experience the 'pause for thought' around 3k rpm. This happens when the car is cold and warmed up....
If you know why this happens please would you enlighten me. Higher up in the rev range it's not normally a problem. Using 97 ron fuel. Serviced 1.5k miles ago.
I'm no mechanic. Had previous Honda experience with Civic VTEC, Civic 2.2 diesel (chipped to 194bhp) and VFR 800 VTEC. Never experienced a low rev hesitancy with the cars or the bike.
Grateful to anyone who can help.
Cheers.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. Airbox lid is on. By missing do you mean misfiring? I've never experienced a car misfire before so would be certain if I did experience it. Would it normally be as predictable as the experience I'm having?
Thanks.
Yeh sorry, mis fire.
Sometime coils break down at certain revs, like a resonant frequency. Before they completely fail, although to be honest, I would be surprised if this is the case on a 2006.
Does it happen no matter what the throttle position? It really shouldn't hesitate at 3k, mine powers straight through. Did you buy the car from a dealer? I would be tempted to take it back and ask them to diagnose under warranty if you can?
Or find a mate with a OBDII reader to read any fault codes in the computer. I have one and I am in Southampton and Reading depending on the time in the week!

Hi Graham
Thanks again.
It does happen at any throttle position. I don't know what coils are.
I'll take it back to the stealer and get them to look at it.
I may pick your brains again though at some point.
Thanks for suggestions.

Hello Chris,
Hope you enjoy your new S2000
As Graham said check your coiplugs and the plugs. Try to find one spare coilplug and replace it one by one to find the faulty one if this is the problem. I would also change the plugs if i where you.

Hope you enjoy your new S2000

Thanks very much guys. Good it from a honda dealership and have been in touch with the service department. The guy I spoke to described it as a flat spot and they will investigate tomorrow.
I will keep you posted on progress.
Cheers

Mmmmm..... My 10K mile 06/06 does display a bit of heat soak - especially when hot in town. This is my 5th S2000 and they've all done this to some degree. I've always understood it to be the mild split-second hesitation when the engine can't get a good gulp of cool air at low revs (2-3K rpm) in typically 2nd and 3rd as it's effectively (owing to position of air filter intake) only able to pull in hot air from around the engine.
Sounds a bit different from what you describe as my car (and past cars) will only do this not only when thoroughly warm/hot, but will not pick up from 2 to 3K rpm and THEN do it/hit a flat spot as such: more it does it/hesitates just as one puts one's foot down.
Let us know what the dealer comes up with

Out of curiosity gbduo, what significance would the airbox lid have? is it purely that it sucks in warm air? Where about do you live as I'm Southampton based?
I previously owned an RX8 and hesitancy in acceleration was common (like many problems with the RX8). Sometimes it was due to coils so its probably worth checking them, but with the RX8 more often it was a sticky 2nd inlet valve.

Right guys,
The problem: flat spot in 2nd gear when giving it juice from ~2k rpm
The solution so far: 1 can of BG 44K in the tank with a full tank of 97 ron Esso (no shell station near by) followed by 2 Italian tune-ups of around 30 miles each.
No more flat spot. Car feels good. I can only assume it was a fuel system problem unless it returns over the weekend.
Have called the stealers and told them to watch this space. Doing a 350 mile round trip over weekend so rest of can of BG 44k will have run through and I'll be sure either way whether the car needs a once over.
This thing loves the boot and I love the noise.
Thanks guys. I will continue to keep you posted on developments if and when they occur.
