Default Hmmmm... Very large "moment" last night

Normal booting it about on the way home last night and I come across a 225 Audi TT. As soon as he see's me he speeds up but not enough and I get past fast fine.

Then we hit a very large 3 lane roundabout which you can exit, when pushing it, at about 8K rpm in second.

I was pushing it!

Hard on the power on exit - fine - changed up to 3rd starting pulling fine then the back end went West! Big time West!

Caught it going but only just, then swung the other way and then settled.

Know I must have been doing about 70-80mph and was fully sideways!

I'm a bit miffed why it suddenly broke at that sort of speed and gear and was going virtually straight on a bone dry road yet it didn't go when I planted it in 2nd bang in the hot zone? Very odd.

The bloke in the TT was miles behind by then but I think he shit himself more than I did.

I just burst out laughing and couldn't stop for ages.

You must have hit oil or something - you can't break traction at that speed in the dry in a straightline otherwise (unless you are turbo'd to 500whp?)

Oh Moggy! That cut to the bone!

I was expecting it to go earlier as it has before, so that I could catch it but relaxed as I thought I was out of the dangerzone.

Could this be caused by changing gear at the wrong time if the road was dry? As you change up the power is temporarily taken away from the wheels and then re-applied when the clutch is relaised so the back will go light for a moment and then all the power comes back on a light rear end and the car's front wheels are at an angle hence risking a slide / spin?

Maybe someone can confirm this theory for me, but if I am accurate, my suggestion would be to do the island in 3rd or wait a little longer in 2nd before changing up and re-apply the throttle smoothly.

Just a thought.

It's been known to happen when VTEC kicks in on a straight line (albeit wet), so I don't see why it couldn't happen on a gear change. Odd that it was in the dry though.

Chris - yep
