Autosol will do it in one go. Have been using it since about 1972...
Me too

as i said i would not use autosol first if you have pipes like mine were, youll be wasting a lot of a good product, the grit build up was a layer about 5mm thick with stones and other gunk, autosol to finish once its just tar is good, petrol is cheap and quick, and works just as well, its better to use the cheaper product initially, id save the autosol for the final bits where its only tar and residue left. perhaps the guide only applies to owners who have never had the pipes cleaned.

another method ive not tried is to simply soak the area in wd40, wrap and duck tape a bag around it, and come back after 2 hours and wipe off

I think you will find i more than likely have cleaned a lot worse over the many many many years i have owned cars, WD works perfect on its own without wrapping and waiting 2 hours or soaking in petrol or putting socks on, like i say you are turning the simplest of job into a messy task,

harsh, he's only trying to help

the problem with petrol is it evaporates fast as you're finding and so leaves the stuff that's just dissolved in it behind

i cba to clean mine so will never know

That's why I did mine with WD40. You can just leave it for a few hours, come back and the congealed tar just wipes away. As I said in the other thread, a couple of kitchen towels generously sprayed with WD40 wrapped around the tailpipes, plastic bags over the tailpipes taped in place to stop the WD40 evaporating. Then a wipe over followed by Autosol.

Dead easy.

I'm just not sure I read this correct?

I'm currently sat here completely naked wearing odd socks soaked in petrol & WD40 how on earth am I supposed to clean just using my feet??

The neighbours are staring & I feel lightheaded (and strangely aroused)

Well, thanks for the tips, I find the way I've done it here to be easiest, a very simple job and only took an hour from leaving the front door to getting back to a cuppa, maybe 20 mins worth of actual hard work tops? Not messy at all, you get a dirty sock but you can see from the pictures it isn't particularly messy at all.

Tried other methods on various cars I've had, but this is the easiest and cheapest I've found so far, each to their own though! Here's hoping this thread serves as a good guide to those who want to try this and are curious to the options, thanks all.

I'd also like to add that there isn't any need to be so defensive about things, everyone is different, and I welcome all suggestions!
