Whenever I talk to my dad about the increase in thrust when you "hit vtec" he always asks me to explain vtec....
Then laughs at me when I can't .
(I think I need to bookmark this and memorise it.)

Simple to explain it as 2 cams.
Standard road cam up to 6k, mild race cam after.
If he don't understand the difference with cams, the mild race cam allows more fuel/air mix therefore a bigger bang.
If he wants more detail then print off the link and tll him to figure it out for himself

When you're walking you only need a bit of energy and you can breathe with your mouth closed, but if you start to run, you use up more energy and need to open your mouth to be able to breathe more air. Vtec is the same principal - when the car is driving in everyday conditions the characteristics of an everyday engine are required (throttle response at low revs etc.), hence the car runs on 'road' cam profile (the camshaft controls the opening of the valves which deliver fuel/air mixture to the cylinders and allow the exhaust gasses to escape). However when you want more power, this camshaft can't allow the valves to open far enough, so a second camshaft profile is used which allows the valves to open wider, delivering more fuel and air into the cylinders, giving more power.
In principal, that's it, but as with most things, in practice it's a little more complicated (there is only 1 camshaft which has 2 profiles on it and the change to vtec happens with a second set of cam followers activated by an oil pressure switch) - but the walking/running analogy is enough to shut most dads up

Depends Col, if you go from sitting watching TV straight to the rumpy, then yes. However if you like to take it slowly and get your cylinders nicely lubricated first then no, I would say that was more a big displacement theory....
