There was an interesting 1/2 hour programme presented by Trevor McDonald the other Friday on the whole subject of speed limit signs, and the way councils end up marking residents parking bays / disabled parking, double yellow lines etc.

It was amazing how many councils put up signs that aren't legally recognised. The standard speed limit sign in black numbers on a white background bounded by a red circle (fine) but on a yellow background was one of them.

They also covered the well known double yellow line that isn't terminated properyly not being legally recognisable also.

I briefly looked into it for a neighbour who had received 3 points for 38mph in a 30mph that was not legally signed (had a 30mph on a yellow square background), but seeing as their points were about to come off in a few days I advised them to let it go.

As they told me they were driving in their slippers at the time I told them they were lucky they weren't charged with 'not being in full control of a vehicle' or some such charge

You might find these interesting though.

Of course if it was all legally marked and all that, then bad luck etc.

Bad luck ..... I've just done the 14 days + postage wait after being lasered by a nice mobile man who was 'hidden' on a bend. I was lucky and must have been just under what he was interested in but I am sure my time will come !!

A 30 doesn't need signs in all cases. Built up area with streetlights = 30 if no signs. IIRC

i've invested in a RA II.. however i seem to drive quicker every where now, gives you a false safe of security.

however about 10days ago i was caught by a gatso camera, RAII did not warn me, the camera flashed head on at me, i think i just triggered it off, as they are not suppose to get you head on.

I turned the car around, and headed back the RAII warned me this time... we shall see what the postman brings in the next 2 weeks or so...

then i will make a decision on the RA II, if it was worth it or not,

I think officially that gives me 3 points again now. My last 3 points dropped off back in June but it stays on your license until 4 years have elapsed.

AquilaEagle is right, in the 'Commonly asked questions' section, one of the questions was

Q: There were no speed limit signs so how would I know what speed was acceptable ?

A: In this case the most likely answer is that you wee in a 30mph area. The highway code clearly states that in a built up area with a system of street lights the speed limit is 30mph unless signed otherwise. The local authority is responsible for signing the highway but legally cannot place any additional signs reinforcing the speed limit in a 30mph area.

Funny thing was..me and my mates at work were talking about speeding the other day Seeing who had the most points !!

How many do you guys have then - if any ????
