Got back to the car at the Airport last night (missed another southern meet I see ) and as I joined the motorway, with the car nicely warmed up I floored it to execute the 3 lane shuffle.

The car felt fine as the revs increased and as it hit 6k the Vtec cut in. Got to 7k and the car started to stutter and hesitate. I tried it a few times more and the problem was consistent.

It was clearly electronic and not a combustion problem. Got a bit worried, drove home carefully and jumped straight on here.

Following a search, quite a few horror stories, I came across a few threads detailing the symptoms and cure of exactly my problem.

The MAP sensor (Manifold something or other) apparently can stick (relates to MY00 / MY01 mainly) restricting the fuel flow during Vtec.

As instructed I removed the MAP sensor (2 screws) disconnected it and ...oh god...hit it quite hard with the handle of a large screwdriver.

I put it back in, reconnected the wire, crossed everything and went back out.

The car is now better than I ever remember it with a very progressive pull from 4.5k through to 9k.

I phoned Honda today and asked for a price for a new one (which I don't now need). They quoted me

mmmm, now you are worrying me.......I stupidly I know stuck in Sainsbury's SUL in on Saturday and I got some hesitancy in VTEC

I put this down to a crap batch of fuel as I seems rather a coincidence to happen straight after I fill up

Mine was more lumpy and defo felt like a combustion problem, wondered if the fuel might have been contaminated with water?

Nice one Shipley.

I'm hoping mine will be ok. I wouldn't know a MAP sensor if it jumped up and bit me in the ar$e.

You ought to be careful about unnecessary whacking.

Fletch, its a widely adopted method of sorting things out don't you know....

your car plays up....you give it a whack!

your car is being terrorised by moggies and foxes.....you whack them!

your service manager says "don't think the warranty covers that noise mate"....you give them a whack!!

bish, bash, bosh sorted!

Of course, it all depends on what you ar using to effect the 'whacking'. A leather glove will work quite well on the service manager, but you will need a sniper rifle with night vision for the moggies!

Normally I wouldn't dream of doing much under the bonnet but this sensor is right above the throttle linkage and therefore right in front of you.

Its about 1" square and is coloured blue with MAP sensor written on it. HArd to miss really. Two screws and one wire hold it on.

Its quite worrying the impact of its failure.

All is again fine this morning.
