Brilliant summary, and thanks for the info.
It's reassuring to hear your experience, and that they sound like they're listening.
As I'm paranoid and on my third engine, I for one am waiting for a definitive statement - my warranty's expired, and due to my lack of confidence I've paid myself for a new 3 year extended warranty......I'm hoping I don't need it, and/or they do a recall once they know for sure what's wrong.

Do keep us all posted on any further news - and thanks for your tenacity!

Mikey (and Kay)

Your trip looks FANTASTIC! Any chance you could send me the route - if you have it on satnav? I'd love to compare it with ours for overlaps...and possibly a rewrite of some of our route

I loved the commentary on your thread and those photos are just mindblowingly gorgeous! Your new S looks as stunning as ever!

As for me and Jenson, I'm in a better place now than a month or so ago when I almost sold up but, you know me, pig-headed. So I'm still here, hanging on in and pushing HUK from the rear - not a bad place to be

Hi Elijah, thanks for your kind words - I'll be sure to post up when I get Jenson back.

Sounds funny I know, but even with all this trouble I have retained confidence in my car (or is that just blind love). I have continued to drive it with joy...until the next noise presented. So I fully understand where you're coming from. Fingers crossed HUK & Honda Japan can bottom this out once and for all and we can all exhale!

Hi Martin
I trust you and L are well?

I'll be sure to update this thread once I have Jenson home and hear back from HUK.

Can't wait for the trip now - this time in 2 weeks I'll be in Carcassonne

A quick update from me before I head out the door on holiday (I've also updated the 09 thread):

I got Jenson back at the end of last week and a report from HUK the middle of this week. Would've updated sooner but clearing work down to go on holiday today.

The gear lever insulator retainer (gaiter) was replaced with a new part - I suspect the old one was broken when the gearbox was last worked on and it was not replaced. Following this replacement, HUK were unable to replicate the whirring, grinding noise. They swopped exhaust and cat between Jenson and the baseline HUK S2000 to no effect.

The upshot is they have concluded that the new gaiter has worked some sort of magic and the noise I'd heard was due to the incorrectly fitted gaiter which allowed excessive gearbox and clutch noises into the cabin (which wouldn't normally be heard). I'd be fine with this if the original speculation at HUK when I was down there was that it was indeed gearbox or clutch related! However this was not the case - the master technician thought at the time that it was neither gearbox nor clutch. (To be fair, I must point out that it was he who wrote the report on behalf of HUK and so I'm comfortable that he would be able to identify the noise if it had since been heard.)

As things stand I'm leaving today on a 2,300 mile hoon around Europe, taking in the Stelvio and the Verdon Grand Canyon (thanks Mike )and will drive my car as per the old motto: Drive it like you stole it in essence I'm on a 2,300 mile test drive! Warranty cover extends into Europe so if anything does occur, I'll be on the phone.

Now all I have to do is to put all of this out of my mind for the next 2 weeks! Suspect it won't take long!

As far as the 08/09 issue and HUK goes, I've not heard anything further regarding any other testing and so am up for whatever the club, in it's wisdom, decides to do on behalf of the impacted owners.

I've suggested that all those who provided details to Bundle of Mayhem also confirm the dealers through whom they purchased their vehichel and those who subsequently carried out warranty repairs as these are the parties with whom we have contracts. And any specialist motor vehicle solicitor will not touch our case if they have any of these parties (or indeed HUK) as a client. So it'd be good to have this info to hand should we pursue the legal angle.

And before anyone has a dig at me for thinking I'd get any further info out of HUK, I do still think there are things going on behind the scenes of which we are unaware and that HUK will be the proverbial frantic duck in trying to resolve this, although from the outside all will appear calm and inert!

A split gaiter will cause unwanted noises in the cabin...just as it does with the MX5.

Enjoy your holiday Trish

How come ******** didn't spot that?

Funny ain't it .... the 3 bits that I changed on mine all that time ago to cure bloody noise in the cabin is now the bit they've changed - for the record Marshall Honda failed to spot that broken part when they went on a noise investigation spree.

The ring that holds that seal down is brittle and far too easy to snap, especially when removed without any degree of care or skill.

IIRC the seal ring, gearsstick bush and nylon ball cost about 15 quid and are a 20 minute job to change.
