Just a One Off Component Failure.... OR another Design weakness???
Just got my Y00 car back after having my Clutch Master Cylinder replaced. I'm left thinking, as the title indicates of this post thread indicates...."Is this yet another design weakness, or just a One Off"
Has anyone else experienced the following:
Clutch Peddle movement over a matter of months becomes restrictive, to the point where after approximately 30mins "B Road" driving, ie plenty of those lovely gear changes, the clutch peddle starts to emit what can only be described as a groan every time I depressed the peddle to change gear. Also when taking my foot back of the clutch, the peddle appears to almost "stick".
I originally thought "sticky mechanism", maybe plastic bush assembly on the peddle was worn, and being a hydraulic clutch, obviously nothing to do with worn cables or the like.
However, after letting the technicians check it out at my local dealership, back came an almost matter of fact response, "Yes Sir, Its the master Cylinder... I'll get the warranty paperwork together, and well get that replaced for you"
This leads me to my conclusion, that possibly its another known weakness. I've already had the TSB055 for the upgraded Clutch Plate with the stronger return spring, and made me think that maybe the extra effort required to drive the Y02 clutch, has been all too much for the Master Cylinder??
Anybody care to offer their opinion??
All I can say it the new Cylinder means changing gear has regained the pleasure it once was before the problem developed.... ohhh I love this car when it works.... but she's high maintenance... Especially for Honda UK!

Perhaps you have just been unlucky Stiv?
Nothing has gone wrong with my car in the year that I have owned it.
Yes, it had the oil bolt recall, but it wasn't any hassle and my warranty was extended. I was quite reassured by Honda's willingness to admit to a possible problem and tackle it promptly.
I expect my alloys to corrode at some point - but worse things happen at sea.........
You could try a TVR.

STIV, I could be wrong about a lot of this but:
Honda, like most manufacturers keep a list of known faults with their cars. If you go down to you local honda dealer with one of these faults the dealer will gladly sort it out for you. They'll get paid by honda for doing the work. This one of the ways they make their money. If you turn up with a fault that they haven't heard of before it's more complicated. They have to contact honda to get permission to do the work.
Faults fall into different categories. The most serious is the compulsory recall where they decide all cars must have it. A number of other faults are labelled "customer complaint" if you say it's wrong they'll fix it straight away. Sometimes this will be just a squeeky thingy or a rattly whatnot , sometimes it's more serious.
It sounds like your problem was one they know about. Honda probably know it happens to 0.3% of MY02 S2000s between 5000km and 10000km or somesuch (and some genius in Japan probably predicted this would happen when they designed it!)
Ramble over.

I work for another car manufacturer but reason for getting permission from manufacturer before doing the work is so we can go and have a look and try to countermeasure quickly if it looks like a big problem (that's how they become known problems)
I'm doing this with a vehicle in Czech Republic on Monday

Having been on this board for about 18 months 'ish, I don't recall ever seeing this specific problem. I spent a lot of time recently looking around for any known faults because my warranty was due to expire in April. Of the long list of known stuff accumulated, problems with the Master cylinder aren't included.
I have a Y2K S2K with 33,000 miles on the clock and have no such problem. I've had the clutch mod done but that doesn't relate to the master cylinder.
I think its a one off.
