Default locking wheel nuts

am i the only one to have had a problem with these? i picked up a rear puncture at the campsite at le mans last w/end. no prob's i think - the place is full of garages, but i couldn't loosen the locking wheel nut. have a look in your boot at the tool they provide - it's complete crap, you can't get any leverage on it. go on - try it at home this evening....actually try it before you get a puncture and find out the hard way.

after a couple of efforts it slipped and cammed the metal, so i stuck a load of tyre-weld in, pumped it up and rolled round to the nearest tyre place. they couldn't do anything either, so they started trying to loosen it with a hammer & chisle on the wheel nut. at this point i could see the whole thing going downhill fast, so i called them off, rolled it back to the campsite and called the aa. full marks, they got a flat-bed truck to me in 15 minutes, fighting through the traffic, loaded the car up and took me round to their garage, where they took one look at the nut, decided not to even try, and performed an amazing trick with a screwdriver and some vulcanising paste. basically they did a bicycle - repair job onto the INSIDE of the tyre, without taking the tyre or wheel off - you figure it out, very impressive it was too. no speed limit, no only-lasts-10-miles. just to make sure, i gave it the full thrashing home and had no problems with it. by the way, if you ever do that journey, there's a wonderful long tunnel on the main road between le mans and calais. do yourself a favour - make sure you are hood down, drop it into 3rd and proceed to 9000rpm. nice noise.

anyway, point is, i now have a f**ked wheel nut that won't come off the car, which i'll have to take into honda and get sorted. given that these wheels/tyres don't fit that many cars anyway, the advantages of locking wheel nuts probably arn't great. am i the only one whose had problems with them?

Personally I've had no bother with my wheel nuts or locking nuts, but one thing I do is put a very fine coat of copper slip on the threads first and it works every time, no binding on the threads. Not every body will recomend the use of copper slip on wheel threads stating "the nuts could work them selfs off" but IMO if the nuts are nipped up theres no problem, I've never had a wheel come off in 25 years! But its up to you if you want to give it a try.

I have used copper slip for many years with no problems ever.
Can save a lot of grief, miles from home on a dark rainy night
