Default Looking for an S2000....

Now that I have my 'new Car', Picking up today.

A Golf GT TDi PD 115 (6 speed ) massive Torque, so don't let me get in front on medium twisties with same gear short straights

Frickin Hilarious to drive, don't bother above 3500 rpm, get it back into next gear and 2000rpm and feel the shove!

All the goodies I need, 4 seats , Full leather interior, Climate, Cruise control , Multi-function computer, CD player etc! Heated seats, heated mirrors(now you're jealous & heated headlamp washers.

Reading my Father-in-laws 'Diesel Monthly' this engine can be re-mapped to knock out 170+ Bhp with > 300 lb/ft of Torque and be more economical! (Even less gear changing!!!, already 50 mpg!), just as reliable and knock a 0-60 time of <8seconds .

My question is as in the UK they stop at 150BHP (although in reality they reckon all of the PD engines are underquoted (even tested in Autocar last week they found this to be true) ), the germans can knock out 180BHP versions, is it just emissions stopping us?(don't see why in Europe, unless its a tax thing) or are there gearbox issues??

Only a very local garage can do it for less than

Paul, both the TDi and 1.8T engines can be chipped quite easily without much strain the the engine or drivetrain.
My 150bhp A3 1.8T was chipped to 197bhp for 3 years with absolutely no problems, similar reports come from TDi owners who have had their engines chipped.
The only reason I believe for different outputs is to delineate between models (ie. to be able to charge more for essentially the same car), under the skin most models are the same, gearboxes etc. are engineered to cope with the higher output engines.

The only sticking point is the issue of any warranty claims, if the car is chipped VAG can (and have) use this as grounds to refuse to do work.

Aye read about the chips too, but the re-mapping is the one now recommended, as they lift the original & store it, re-map onto the ECU already there(fine tuning I'm guessing) & if you need to revert back you pop along & download old one that you have a copy of on a 'customer key' . A Laguna 1.9TD they did in May 2003 issue, didn't even have to open the bonnet!

120 Bhp to 144
199lb/ft to 236!!

APR (USA) are soon going to be sellling switchable re-maps for 1.8T VAG engines. This obviously has the added advantage of switching the car back to stock before taking into your dealer. This is done through the cruise control stalk. I think it is essential that you get the car RR'd before and after by an independent and not the tuner.

APR Europe disbanded for various reasons, including some of the employees starting a new company called REVO. REVO also supply remaps and I am fairly certain the supply for diesels too, only downside is that you cannot change back to stock.

I personally think the APR route will be the best if you don't want a chip and you need to change back to stock.

But there is one thing you can't do with the Golf Paul.

You can't go topless

Paul,

if you want an S2000, then get the original, substitutes just don't count !!

A friend of mine has the Golf Tdi (110BHP). He said that you can get a little black box which sits in-line somewhere that ups the BHP to 150. It takes just 1 minute to (un)install, so returning to stock is a breeze. I don't know all the details, but I am happy to find out if you're interested.

I took my 807 up to my local Peugeot dealer to register it for warranty purposes and a guy there told me of a firm in Shrewsbury who would reprogram the chip to give me 175 bhp if I wanted (it's 130 bhp in std format - 2.2l HDi) - cost also
