Default Memoscan U480 OBDII reader

I had contributed to another thread about OBDII readers but thought I'd start a new one about the particular reader I bought incase someone has had any luck with them.

Quick summary, I fitted a Garage R Decat last week and it threw the CEL light so I bought a Memoscan U480 reader from Ebay.

Name: ODBIICANReaderU480.jpg
Views: 1095
Size: 403.0 KB

It arrived today and even after following the instructions to the letter I keep getting a Linking Error.

I just assumed all these OBDII readers should work but am I wrong? Before I contact the seller, is there something on the Ebay advert that I missed? Obviously if there is something in the advert that should have made me realise it's not suitable for my car it'll be my responsibility to sell on.

I've searched the forum here and seen that people have used this reader but all seem to be earlier cars. I've a 2008.

I'm properly confused

I don't think it makes a difference but have you...

Got ignition on AND unlocked the car when sat in it? - if you don't unlock properly the car doesn't give access to the ECU.

I think someone with a later car had the same issue but can't remember if it made a difference.

Thanks dude.

I opened the passenger door and connected the reader to the port. It lights up and displays Memoscan U480

When that's lit up I put the key in the ignition and turn so the engine lights come on.

Press Enter in the reader and it scrolls through the OBD protocols VPM, PMW, CAN, KWP2000 and ISO9141......it then says Linking Error.

That's the procedure in the manual.......

The OBD port on the car feels a little loose but even applying a little pressure on the connector to ensure it's tight up in the port doesn't help

Search did bring up someone with a similar issue but that guy hasn't been on since 2009 so I was hoping someone has had some better luck since then and just didn't post anything about it.

Can't help you, I know later cars in the US changed from OBD to CANBUS but unsure if UK cars are the same.

Enter the car from the driver's side as the locks will engage after 45 seconds if the driver's side is not opened...perhaps this is the issue

Ach! I had hoped that would have been the problem and tried connecting it by keeping the driver's door open and reaching over but no such luck

I also retried it but with the engine running and still got an Link Error.

The reason I bought this one was because it says that it will read CANBUS as well as OBDII and EOBDII.

Back to the drawing board

BUT DON'T BUY IT THERE make sure you buy one with a serial number so it can be updated via Launch website.

Thanks Rich, although I wonder why it won't work with later S2000s? I've an engineering friend who I'm sure will enjoy taking it apart to see if he can make it work somehow.

In the end I just disconnected the battery and it cleared the CEL although I expect it'll come back on again before long.

I remember you having a wee bit of trouble on MQs car UF which inspired me to pay more as I knew for sure I'd get issues if there was any doubt.
The Gendan works on all cars I have tried (MY08, MY04 S2K and other manufactuers). You may not want to pay that money but if you do then I'd recommend it.

Where are you based Feck? Anyone else with a meter nearby?
