Default Name that tune.

What does it sound like when an S2000 goes roaring overhead at 9k with airbox cover off?

Ask the hedgehog I flew over last night.

Often.

(No, i didnt hit it!)

This probably seems like a silly question but why do you run with the airbox cover off?

I assume it increases the flow of air into the engine and makes it sound a little more interesting but are there any problems/risks associated with doing this? Presumably the air filter is still in place?

I once tried my 2CV (first car!! Don't laugh - it was cool!) without the air filter in and it sounded incredible - but gave me a headache!!

Sorry for the naivity but I am not only new to the S2000 but this is the first truely performance car I have owned and I am still enjoying the effect!

Just give it a try Frisky. 2 minutes up and down the road and you'll know why its popular!

Downsides - potential power loss from intake of heated air (hot rather than warm), increased potential for water/FOD damage to the filter and subsequent ingestion of FOD. (Use of an aftermarket filter strongly advised)

I'll defer to the more technically minded members of the board, but my understanding is that other than a minute reduction in the amount of power generated by the engine (in the order of 5bhp or so), and a theoretical risk that something could get sucked up and into the air filter (which was dismissed as requiring a stone to take a path even less probable than the trajectory that the Warren Commission concluded that the JFK bullet took........!), there's no real risk to speak of.

I think the main concern aired was that it might impact on a warranty claim, since Honda would be able to tell from the ECU that the airbox cover had been removed, if you had been doing so for any length of time.

Only did it for a few days.

May take it off again for some laps on my airfield day at the weekend, but I cannot get over the mind games of possibly having less power.

I have put it back on for now.

NIce to see you read posts from so long ago Mark (was it me who used the analogy of the "magic bullet"? ). Anyway, I have run with the air-box lid off since the Abinger Meet. My dealer is fully aware and has not expressed any warranty concerns at all. All they said at the 18,000 service was "Might need to replace your air filter a bit earlier than the 27,000 mile recommended" - I put the cover on for a day or two but couldn't feel any power gain and missed the sound terribly - so I took it off again

OK, interesting!

I guess the next logical question is - is it easy to take off? If so, how?

Also, presumably something like a K&N filter will give similar sound improvements with the added ability to clean it?

Ta,

6 clips on the top of the air box (its worth checking the filter's condition regularly anyway.... it does suck in some odd things, mine also got badly fcuked up by water ingestion not too long ago.... damn sure my engine would have been well and truly screwed if I'd left it 27k miles without replacement ) dead easy to do

K&N, JR Racing, Spoon all do replacement elements. Don't ask about power gains, its too contentious! My JR Racing one (many big thanks to Brian!) is great and I feel a whole lot happier knowing it isn't made of fricken water soluble crap.

(<muttering to self> 'eaten by mosquitos' my @rse.....)

Washing the car last night and finishing off cleaning the underside of the bonnet I also wondered what it would be like to drive without the filter cover, and wondered if there would be any more of an engine grunt etc......so I did it ! - but I hadn't noticed any previous posts about it on this site.
Well, didn't feel any more power gain but it felt a bit sluggish. Obviously more noise when you accelerate, sounds OK but sort of reminded me of the rice-boy fiesta's/nova's you hear driving along after they've punched a hole in their exhaust box with a screw driver ! - carried on for maybe 10 mins then pulled over and put the lid back on, gave it some wellie ! and thought 'that's better, back to normal' !!

Are we talking about the same thing, here? I mean, there are lots of shades of opinion on here about the power-loss issue, but I've never heard anyone use an analogy like that before with respect to the sound. Most people split their faces grinning
