Default New 4.44 gears broken

Hi All,

I have had an issue with my diff a while back with the crown and pinion wearing prematurely (due to Honda putting in the wrong oil). I ordered a set of 4.44 from Motorklasse.

After install it drove briliantly, i loved the gears and would tell anyone who would listen how good they are. The car felt alive again.

I drove them in (heatcycles etc) and took it very easy for about 400km. Took it for a long drive after that and started whining again. To the point that it was worse than before.

I took it back (to the professional installer) and he took the new ring and pinion out. The ring was fine but the new pinion was worn badly, to the point that it was "shiny" and not black like the other parts. The installer said that this new diff was not able to cope with the power and was not suitable for the S2000.

All other parts, bearings, bolts, collapsable spacers etc were all still fine.

Has anyone experienced this before?

I now sit with a big bill to get everything replaced with genuine honda parts since i dont want to make the smae mistake again.

Any help, suggestions, experience or pointers would be appreciated

Not had any problems wit my 4.625 gear.

I suspect that it wasn't installed properly in the first place.

Well you could be right, but the guys i took it to specialise in diffs and propshafts, i think they do about 5 of these a day.

I was very impressed with thier knowledge, and the fact that the owner of the place was supervising my job.

He said based on the wear pattern and the state of all the other parts, there is no indication of wear on anything but the pinion.

They have a garuntee on the install. But obviously not on the parts since i installed them.

the 4.6 u refer to is a Ricks product right?

I've read that it is a good idea to uprate the diff itself with Comptech parts (housing etc) I assume they used new shims? I havn't heard of the pinion failing before in my reading on gears recently. Sorry to hear it mate.

I had J's Racing 4.44 gears on my car for about 1 year and about 2 months ago, the pinion broke.
I did some track days and drifts but that doesn't justify the failure. My friend has 4.3 for 2 years, he's a race driver and participates in many drift races + street drag races with lots of clutch drops...No problem at all
So we concluded it was bad installation.

Could be the install. New price they quoting me is to replace everything including bearings etc since they dont want to take risks this time.

There is no way to prove bad install.

Installers saying poor parts (and tread and wear pattern indicates this)

I'm sure the supplier (who is yet to get back to me) will say its installation.

Τhe particular 4.3 gears are Mazda and he bought it used!
However the installer was great at his job and he used micrometer for perfect installation. That's why they last so long.
