You don't feel the kick as much because you've got more mid range shove below Vtec. So instead of going from SLOW (below Vtec) to FAST (Vtec range). You now go from pretty quick (below Vtec) to fast (Vtec), so the change over doesn't feel like a big jump, the older cars couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding below Vtec
