Default newb in a CTR thinking about S2000

Hi guys!

Since January this year I've been a happy owner of a 2007 Civic Type-R, but being that previously I drove a MR2 turbo (rwd fun!), I am on the lookout for the next car as the CTR is not exactly what I want. I dont need practicality and a folding roof is a bonus, what I mostly want is RWD and LSD and reliability.
So, how are S2000's on that front ? I use the car every day (about 120mls / week) so it will be no weekend car. which models should I be looking at ? To be honest, I am not keen on cars older than 5 years
Cheers,
Jan

If you are looking at 5 years or younger then I'ts a facelift, and it will have DBW, you can see the year differences in the tech FAQ. Other than that there are only two models, roadster and GT, no difference (not even badges) just the GT has a removable hardtop. And despite what you may read on here as reliable as any other Honda, it came first in the Top Gear satisfaction surveys for years.

Hi,

DBW as in drive by wire?

I'll check the FAQ's out. Wanted to hear from owners, too

Hi Jan,

The car is pretty practical, with a boot that's a decent size. You can remove the polystyrene block that stores the tool kit at the bottom of the boot (under a cover) to create a bit more space.

As a daily driver it's served me well. I've now had two (2001 and 2004 models) and covered 110,000 miles between them (93,000 in my current car) and apart from standard maintenance and one light bulb they have run like clockwork.

The car still looks good, is great fun, and for the money (when I was looking anyway) it was the best value by miles on terms of running costs.

Good luck!

Rikki

Yes DBW is drive by wire, some on here knock it saying it's not so resposive, but on some American threads there are claims that it's more so, bit Marmite really. Later cars are more road user friendly whereas the older ones are reported to be a bit more raw. But as you are looking for a younger car thats a moot point. I would personally avoid VSA as it's better to learn to drive the S properly than to rely on a computer to get you out of problems. VSA modules have been proven to be somewhat unreliable and are expensive to replace, and a VSA light on the dash is now an MOT fail. All that aside good hunting for your perfect S Jan, have a look on the members for sale thread and avoid like the plague S20004U.

I would recommend an 04/05 model which benefits from the facelift, lower VED amongst other things. There is another thread discussing this at length.

Great car, mine was a daily drive until late last year (and only stopped being so because the winters were not being kind to it) and it was superb at the job. The boot is surprisingly practical (it can even fit a 5'9" man with a bit of effort...); but above all else, arriving at work after a topless jaunt is just about the best way to start any day

I've had a few little niggles that could be expected from any 10 year old car, other than that it's been a paragon of reliability.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys - I'm looking for a dealer that will have one so I can drive it.

I'm basically looking at a segment which could also contain the VX220 (Vauxhall...not so sure), Boxster (too girly, no LSD and not cheap - but very well made), z4 (not keen
on beemers at all, but sounds good).

How drivable is the S2K 2.0 outside VTEC range? (lower). In normal traffic, city driving, is it completely dead below 5.5k rpm ? From experience with the same engine, but in my CTR, I can drive it around quite easily very rarely getting on VTEC and it's ok-ish - obviously not super high torque in lower revs, but in "economy" mode, I can easily go 1-2-5-6 and drive like a granny

Pie_n_chips nice car, but I'm looking at dealers - so I can p/x my Civic and get some warranty, too.
