Default Next Generation S2000

Kinda missing my S2K, so started reading on the web about the next generation model which I thought was due out sometime over the next couple of years.

Info is a bit sketchy and the S660 seems to be suggested as their next sportscar rather than an S2000, and there is some uncertainty as to whether the next S2000 will actually be built at all (am I reading this correctly or getting confused)

Anyhow; having rung Honda UK their c/services dept seem to think the next gen S2000 will only be available in the asian market (assume by this they mean Japan) and only the S660 will be available in the UK.

Does anyone have any inside knowledge.

Also; i've always fancied a series 2 Exige, so had a test drive recently. To be honest I was a little dissapointed with the performance but have yet to try out a supercharged model.

Assume someone on the forum has or still owns one, so I'd be interested on their thoughts.

HUK probably knows less than we do.

The S660's not coming here - too small & too much re-engineering required.

The 'S2000' looks like it's gonna be spun off the NSX plank; eSHAWD version available, plus the basic with a tuned CTR engine. It will be quite expensive, being NSX-based.

Honda seems to be going round and round with several different proposals, so don't bother waiting. It'll be a while coming.

Probably...

can they re acquire their mojo is the key question. I've not seen anything to suggest they can for a while. That turbo nutter bastad Civ is probably closest to the competition but not sure how it really translates as a Honda

After my first S2k had an impromptu meeting with some ice immediately followed by a wall, I got myself an S2 Exige S with a lot of factory mods and kept it for a year.

In summary, my opinion is that performance is the only thing the Exige has over the S2k, which is why I came back. The S2k is the more rewarding drive in more situations, I only felt I got anywhere near my money's worth from the Exige on the track. From my experience of tracking my Exige in the company of others, ultimately, an NA Exige will be quicker than a supercharged one, or at least cheaper to make quicker. An Exige is no replacement for an S, it's "just" a track weapon. Having said that, there are people with Exiges who only use them on the road and love them I enjoyed the Exige, but nowhere near as much as the S2k, and not enough to make me want another.

If you can afford an Exige, perhaps you'd consider an Evora instead which is a much more rounded and sophisticated car? I'd be surprised if you can't get a standard Evora for £26k, no need for the supercharger either; you'd buy it for the exceptional handling, which is the only reason to consider one over an S2k.

Biggest drawback with the Evora is the fixed roof.

They're fixing that next year, but probably in Ev-400 form.

Nothing wrong with the 400, except it's probably too hard & too fast (reading the forums) compared to the original. Which was a very nice car indeed.

the right supercharged S2 Ex will do 0-100 in about 10s so they are quick and not just round corners. Properly basic and not well put together but look amazing to me

i may yet buy one although i've been saying that for a while and have a filthy affair with my v8 E92 atm

Paul, I loved the Exige before I got my S in 2004. I thought it looked like a mini M12 Noble and seriously wanted one. BUT I had my heart set on a soft top so it was between an Elise and an S2000 for me. After the test drive of the S the Elise didn't even get tested. I've therefore no experience of Exiges but knowing what you said in the past of your main dislike of the S being that it doesn't sound like a sports car (or worse to that effect) would you be satisfied by another raspy screamer? Controversial I know, but maybe a TVR?
(although it'd be good to see you back in an S)

BTW, the 'expanded' Euro-sized S660 (S1000) might still be making an appearance in 2017.

Rumours go round and round.

Thanks for the comments folks re the Exige; I think I'm gonna pass on one to be honest.

Probably won't go back to the current S either.

I always wanted a MK5 R32 so bought one after I sold the S and kept it only about 6 months; a very capable car but it's important to me to look forward to getting behind the wheel each day and this feeling soon dissappeared with the golf.

Might consider one of the current Boxster's in a year or t0o, if there's no progress with the new S.

Will keep lurking on the forum though.

All the best folks,

Paul
