Default NFR Purchase

Hi all,

Having declined a 2009 S2000 yesterday which was on sale for £13990 in Chippings Norton due to it being UNDRIVEABLE. I have lost all confidence and decided to look elsewhere - which brings me onto this lovely NFR example. The car looks immaculate on the pictures and has had 2 owners. The gent has plenty of Honda documents from its service history etc. I even noticed a UK S2000 Owners Club document in the ad. In terms of MOT history, the usual:

1. Offside rear brake binding (2017)
2. Rear brake dics corroded (2014)
3. Offside Rear Outer brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (2017)

Price wise its a bit steep, i will try and get him down to £15500.

This is the link:

Please tell me what you think and what i should ask him!

Rear brakes are often a problem on the S2 unless constantly driven hard as they don’t normally do much work. Can’t get the link to work for me sorry.

it looks lovely

rear brakes are not a big issue, worst case is refurbed calipers and new discs and pads, its common and inexpensive to fix

i would be interested in the engine history, some late cars had issues but they would likely have bubbled up in 55k if there was a problem

service history must be on point for top money, regular oil, diff, gearbox changes etc

its 10 now, i'd underseal it

remember, its worth a premium for a premium example but you need to ensure its that and keep it that

Do you have a link to the undriveable car?

What was so bad about it?

It’s looks clean enough. As already mentioned there is MANY detailed threads on the reliability issues with the 09 engines so definitely worth spending an hour or two reading those posts.

It really amazes how much S2000s demand. £16k seems very steep.

The things I'd be looking at in more detail on that red 09 are:
  • All brake calipers look like they've been refurbed or at least painted fairly recently, any documentation on this work and what prompted it?
  • Engine Cam cover is peeling a bit, not a problem but at only 55k maybe the car's been stored outside?
  • Those wheels haven't been on the car for 55k (look how pristine the centre caps are), or have been refurbed - what was on the car in their place. Not a big deal but worth asking to prove you know what you're looking at.
  • You can see a lot of the rear wheelarch from the photo, there's apparently been no new undersealing beyond OEM, take a torch and have good look in there, and especially the part inside just above the wheelarch trim. Before you get to the point of handing over your cash, I'd pull the rear arch protectors off and see if they've ever been left off/changed and if there's any damage to the paint, corrosion etc.
Other than that it looks decent. Personally I'd go for a different colour at that price as paint maintenance may be a headache (though an S2k is worth the headache so long as you can drive it).

I looked at a similar condition MY06 in 2015 that only had 60k, it could barely pull away, made a racket from the gear box when on the move, and felt like it only had 100hp. I was gobsmacked, the S2k can take a lot of abuse so I can't imagine what the owner had done to it, filled the gearbox with expanding foam perhaps??

You'll know when you drive a decent one.

Probably crap in the VTEC solenoid filter or a blocked fuel filter due to being permanently run down to sod all. It's a challenge with an older car with a few miles on, unless you know how it has been driven / maintained it's a complete shot in the dark.
