Default Odd plastic trim?

I noticed about 2yrs ago, an odd piece of plastic trim on the rear bumper.
It's just a silly little thing that has puzled me, but not enough to remember to ask about.

The piece Im refering to is just inboard and above the OSR exhaust pipe chrome trim.

Its only on the one side, I though I had lost one, but no I have seen others the same.

So, what DOES this little black plastic corner piece ACTUALLY do???

Its a rub strip for the exhaust when you are thrashing the pants of the thing. The engine rotates one way causing a twisting motion, adding this to a high G cornering speed the exhaust will move over and hit the bumper and eventually damage the paint. It is put there to stop this happening.

I know the one Steve, I had to check on another car to make sure there weren't 2 when my bumper was replaced but odd why it's only on one side

I'm glad someone brought this up. I only have one piece as well and I thought I'd lost one. I was going to mention about it but forgot.

Thanks for the explanation too Matt

I don't see how the pipe can move that much given the weight, and the abundence of rubber mounts.

However, I cannot see any other logical reason for it, this is the best explanation!
Thanks!

I remember another thread about this quite a while ago. Its to protect the bumper as mentioned, but still puzzled as to why it's on one side and not both.
