Default Odd sound when in VTEC

The weather was great today, so with little prompting I dragged the S out and joined a few friends for a leisurely trip to Cumbria.

The S seemed to be going OK for its first major run of '08, but on the few occasions it was possible to get some revs up, the car sounded very harsh when in VTEC - a coarse metallic sound - in fact, it sounded quite unpleasant. The noise appeared an soon as c. 6K was on the tach' and disappeared as soon as the revs fell below it. Not at all how I remember the car sounded.

On top of that there's an irregular 'fizz' coming from the accessory belt tensioner which makes me think a bearing is on the way out.

Looks like a trip to the dealer for investigation.

Mark, is it not just a noise that you can now hear because of your new bonnet?

Chris.

Because you've swapped your bonnet over you've removed some sound proofing. I'd put my money on it being that

if its a faulty bearing, then squirt some wd40 on them to see which one.wd40 will naturally reduce any bearing noise enough to diagnose.

bearings usually squeak though.

Thanks for the feedback chaps. If it is the new bonnet, I may well refit the sound-proofing - the car sounds bloody awful in VTEC!

A CF bonnet adds ~ 5db to the volume levels.

Either put a louder exhaust onto the car or turn up the stereo and then you won't notice.

I don't think you can easily attach sound proofing to the underside of those bonnets.

I should've remembered that classic student-days car maintenance procedure!

J8mie the BC bonnet has the tangs for holding the OEM soundproofing in place - only a few holes in the reinforcing moulding are required for the clips.

The downside is that replacing the soundproofing will make the bonnet heavier than the original!!!!!!
