Default Origin B2 installed - display problems back

My Origin B2 arrived today and the task for tomorrow is to try and fit it.

I have a few questions and this is the first time I will have done anything of this nature (hope physics A-level is sufficient for the electronics).

I guess I have 2 queries, firstly regarding the routing of the wires, how to keep them hidden and how to make them tidy, and then secondly obtaining a power supply from the fusebox.

I am a little wary aroung removing trim, and looks like I will need to remove the plastic shroud around the A-pillar to route to laser detector to sit behind the rear view mirror. The GPS antenna I presume just needs to sit at the base of the window? If anyone has any pictures theyd be willing to mail me that would be great.

Then there is the larger issue of sorting the power wiring out. I am reluctant to carve up the cigarette power lead provided and would rather make a solution. As far as I see it I either need to find a female cigaratte adapter and use the lead supplied, or find a lead with a suitable jack. The latter would be more tidy, so if anyone can provide me with a description of what I need that would be great (I assume its a 3.5mm jack? And I need a jack leading to an inline 1amp fuse which I will need to wire into the fuse box and to the ground loom?

If anyone has done this and could provide me with a shopping list from Maplins that would help no end. I have searched to try and find an installtion guide/tips on here and on google, but not found anything dumbed down to the level I need.

Any advice appreciated.

In terms of powering it, I used to run an extension lead from the electrical socket to under the driver's seat and then plug the B2 cradle lead into that.

The GPS receiver sat at the base of the windscreen on the passenger side of the dashboard, with the cradle on the right hand side of the instrument binnacle, on the little bit of flat dash beside the A pillar.

Have you got the solo or have you got the one with a wiring loom and GP antenna?

Is really easy to wire directly from the fuse box. Loads of threads with instructions, but am happy to run through it if you need, (I plugged an aux power socket in fuse box and I plug the origin in under the dash).

It is very easy to hide the wire behind the trim without removing anything. Have you decided where you are fitting it? I have had it in several places: on top of the dash, in the right hand vent and now in the box in the centre console.

If you let me know where you plan I can tell you how I did it and you can see if that suits what you want.

All you really need from Maplins is the crimp and connectors set (this has the connectors that fit to the fuse box), an aux power socket, an inline fuse and some adhesive pads to stick the antenna down with. Will take some photos of my set up and post it.

Was done ages ago and can't remember most of the details now but got the power take off from underneath the drivers side and then routed the wires around the side of the of the cosole with the cradle on the dash in the corner by the A-Pillar.

If you pull the trim surrounding the dash forwards there's just enough room between the instuments and the top of the console to fit the GPS receiver in the gap and then bring the wires around the side to to meet up with the connectors.

The trim around the A-pillar comes off fairly easily to allow routing of the laser receiver by the rear view mirrors.

Basically all you can see of the installation on mine is the unit itself and the laser receiver.

Not going to have time today but will try and get pics of the layout tomorrow

I had the Solo version and just snipped the cigar lighter adapter off, as there was enough wire to run from the right hand side of the dash down to the fusebox.

As for mounting the laser detector (which incidentally never went off once), the A pillar trim just pops off (easily) allowing you to hide the wire. Just tuck it under the rubber trim as you send it along to the centre top of the screen (assuming you're mounting it behind the mirror).

Saved me a photo
My set up looks almost exactly like that except I don't have the solo version.

Looks a bit ugly up there on the dash. Ever thought of putting it somewhere a bit more cunning? I've heard lots of rumours on here about a visible B2 winding up the police - and I figured that's best avoided!

The advantage of a hidden install is that you never need to take it off when you park up - so you never forget to plug it back in and you know that's when you'll need it!

TBH, when you're driving (and predominantly looking straight ahead), that position works fine.

By cunning, I can only guess you mean more difficult to read ...

B2 is legal (it's a GPS device), but the laser detector part of it is likely to become illegal in due course. AFAIK, it's still legal at the moment. Either way, you can just unplug the laser doodah and the job's a good 'un ...
