Default perceptions of the S

Was doing the weekly shop at Tescos this morning (don't worry- S safetly parked at the end of the row) . When I was walking back to my car there are a middle aged couple with 18 yr old (ish) daughter looking at the car and talking (couldn't hear what they were saying). When I approached and they realised it was my car comments were

"thats a beautiful car"
"how fast does it go"
"Have you had a Honda before? they are so reliable"
"are they still making these-thought they were only making a limited number"
"you don't see many of these do you"
"ohhh thats a fabulous car" x about 10

I think they got out of a oldish looking Saab

I got thinking- if I was in any other car would I have got this reaction? I don't think so. I think it must be because people are not threatened by the car-its not trying to make a statement, its not really saying "look how succesful I am" or "look how aggressive I drive" ( its not riced up or johhny boy looking is it)

its amazing how material posessions can change peoples perceptions of you. Well I suppose thats how branding is sold really isn't it?

Anyway it was really nice to have people actually stop and talk in the street-just so happened it was the car that got them talking-I mean how many times do you talk to complete strangers on the street? (unless you are a big issue seller)

I now have the answer to world peace-get everyone driving an S

Mostly I hear people as I drive past saying "thats a nice car - what is it". I get a lot of comments from teenagers and kids shouting "nice car", and unlike when I drove my beemer, people indicate in and let me past on fast country roads.

Overall, very positive - it doesn't illicit a negative emotional response from others like a Porsche or a BMW.

, the S is a crowd pleaser. Lots of interest at JAE yesterday.

I still don't quite know how to react when people compliment the car, or the numberplate (I get this quite a lot as well ). My typical response is "cheers mate", can't really say "yeah, I know". The former sounds a tad terse, the latter sounds w@nker, anyone else have any good responses ?

It does seem to get more admiration than anything else.

I think "cheers mate" is a pretty good response to compliments actually. Brushing off a compliment is quite rude and I just try to say "thanks" and give them a smile and some eye contact. Simple but sincere is best IMHO.

Yep definitely, a while ago I rang for a taxi to take me into town, I got talking to the driver about work etc, he asked what car I drove, I told him and he said that I was really lucky and that it was a beautiful car...
Last week, when I was in South Molton visiting relatives, I was stopped by this guy. At first I was a quite weary as I had just unlocked my car and opened the door but he said he just wanted a quick look as he used to own an S800. He asked how it handled in the wet, etc, as he looked around the car he said that it hadn't changed that much and that it was lovely. As he walked away he said "I hope you enjoy driving your car, as much as I enjoyed mine!" I replied "thanks, I will", comments like these make you realise how lucky you are to drive the S...

[B]The S is just a great looking car. I wonder if it's non-agressive image is more to do with the drivers? Take a look at Ianl and AlexC.

People say nice car as they walk past and I'm washing it

Had people ask me how it handles and what I reckon whilst on garage forecourts

Had people chatting to me about how well it goes whilst in standing traffic

I think it's a combination of good looks, performance worthy of respect and rarity. And with the comments about saying thank you when people pay complements to it. always got time for people who like the car
