done any electrical work recently? could have blown all bulbs.
been in boot and moved anything, could have pulled off supply wire
have you checked fuse peoperly?
relay?
or as ae says check the wire to your foot brake switch. is it live? knocked off by foot mat?
you say you have checked fuse under bonnet, what about under dash (by right knee as you sit in car)

The switch is up above the brake pedal. Check you havent yanked the wires cleaning or something. Short it out and see if the lights work, if so you may need a new switch. Price could be anything, have paid

lights work fine its just the brake lights. checked the fuse and even tried a differant one but still no joy. I have not touched any electrics at all and not knocked anything in the boot. I will check the switch on the pedal now ....
