Default Potential S2000 Purchase

I am in the middle of doing a bit of research into my next car purchase and to be honest the S2000 is at the top of my list right now.

I only know one S2000 previous owner and they were pretty upset about one one thing. Depreciation. They bought the car for 20k with 13k miles it being a year old and sold it two years later with 50k miles for 12k.

Anyway. You guys are experts, what do you think of depreciation with the S??

Also what kind of age car and mileage represents the best value in terms of depreciation and general GFM??

Cheers!

They do depreciate, but your mate's example seems exceptional, either he bought it for far too much or sold it for too little.

It may be worth you spending a couple of quid and getting a copy of glass's or what car's price guide.

In my opinion they dont do too badly, not as good as say a Porsche
or Lotus but they hardly lose a fortune either.

Not many around and do ever so well in reliability surveys!!

Buy the oldest, cheapest one you can find. That represents the best value in terms of depreciation and value for money. Also, there's still pleanty of fear and ignorance (some of it here) about Japanese imports, so you can save some more money there.

In cash terms a Boxster will depreciate as much as an S2000, although not in % terms.

Depreciation is not great on the S, and some people do seem to have trouble selling their cars, while others sell very quickly (Shiskine for example), but I don't think it's any worse than it's competitors.

have to agree looking a prices he could have picked up for a little less and sold for more..

in terms of the changes to the s2000 over the years have they been significant enough to warrant stopping buying an older model?

Everything I have seen says reliability is first class.

My first one wasn't reliable - it was in the garage for something or other every couple of months, so reliability isn't a dead cert.

It didn't put me off the car enough not to buy another one, but I would not buy one without a warranty if I could afford to.

Depending on your view of the "hardcore to softie" handling movement over the years, the main thing you are looking at is the glass rear screen (02 onwards). The suspension bush issue appears to affect them all, and I would make sure you are fully aware of this before taking the plunge.

My 02 was a bad one. The 04 is much better.
