Default Power steering

Hi guys,

Ive got a problem with my power steering, its stiffer turning left than right.
I confirmed the fault by measuring and takes apx twice the force to turn left.

theres no EPS fault light so thought it was the rack but did some checks and found that its not getting the same power in both directions, i checked the resistance on the torq sensor (as in the manual) and its ok.

Ive ruled out the speed sensor so recon it can only be the EPS CPU Would be good to try a proved EPS module to see if this is the fault before replacing the rack

SO.... is there anyone in the northampton area that would be ok with a quick swap-over of their EPS that would be great???

Obv this might be a bit nerveracking for anyone without the technical confidence, honestly its fine

If youve got any other ideas that would be good too!

Cheers Chris

It could be an alignment issue.

Does it self centre 'better' one way?

Seems ok when centering and the steering was checked at standstill on the drive so wouldnt be effected by any alignment issues... im thinking

Was expecting when i tested the voltage to the rack that the voltage in each direction would be proportional to the force/torque applied... found that voltage was the same when wheels moved but takes twice as much force to move to the left???

So i checked the torque sensor on the rack and it seems ok... im just left with the EPS module..........i think..

Well castor will affect the load required to turn the wheel, more castor means you are effectively lifting the front of the car when you turn the wheel.

Or a bent steering arm or rack, or knackered balljoint...

But check the amperage too; it could be an EPS issue.

Ive had enough now, ive checked all the joints and tracking, steering rack joint and the teeth on the rack and torque assemb, i even reversed the wiring from the torque sensor and to the rack hoping that the problem would be reversed and prove a control issue.

it's got to be the pump (or pos torque sensor) and so a replacement rack (2nd hand) seems to be the only option - just dont get why its only when turning to the left???

Thanks for the help tho
Chris

Get your Geo checked before splashing out on parts.

Many tyre fitters with the correct rig (not Kwikfit) will check it for free and only adjust if needed.

Check out the FAQ for info on potential issues with alignment bolts:
