Default Private Plates

I am thinking about getting an S2000 plate and was wondering what the crack is, for instance, what happens to my current plate, do I keep this, do I pay a retainer to keep it or simply re-pay the transfer fee should I want to sell the car with the original plate on it and keep the S2000 plate?

These are probably stupid questions but I have not had a private plate before, any guidance would be great thanks

Your current plate, assuming you don't want to keep it, will go back to the DVLA. I don't think they will allocate it to another car, if you decide to take your personal plate off, the original plate will go back on the car.

It costs

You could always pick up the phone and ask the DVLA.

..and be on hold for an hour, just thought I would pose the question here and see if it was a simple process

If you do it through the DVLA it's a doddle. Particularly if you buy the mark from them.

Do it Online (I've never been held up when buying a mark)

The DVLA now take 7 days (or more) to process changes when it comes to selling your car which can be a pain. See the thread below for the fun that Moff and I had with the DVLA. It has make me think twice about getting a private plate to be honest. I'll probably end it getting one at some point though when the pain of this has subsided into memory.

If you buy a car with a private plate, are you not then the owner of said plate by default?
