Default A Question of grip..................

Took the S out on Sunday for a quick run...being cold there was not a great deal of grip on offer from the S02's and I was able to have some tail out fun at relatively low speed........in all honesty it was bags of fun which prompted me to think that 'outright' grip is not something that I place a great deal of priority on

yes if it's a case of racing on a track, sure you want maxium grip but for road use when you are just out to have fun I am more interested in a tyre that is progressive up to the limit and gives plenty of warning it's about to give up

I don't really derive a great deal of pleasure being able to corner that quickly....am I alone in this opinion?

Zero

You've got a point.

What's important is not absolute grip but a car that gives you warning what it's going to do. Old MGB was classic in that regard. It would just progressively understeer and you had plaenty of notice if the back might break away.

On cornering it's as well to remeber what they teach you on a bike: always go into a corner at a speed from which you can stop in the space you can see. No point in being to take a corner at 90 if you meet a tractor coming out of a side turn half way round.

regards

I hate sliding the car, I just love the feel of being able to accelerate hard and feel it gripping with no oversteer.

That's one of the reasons why my MX5 was such fun, you could easily provoke oversteer in 2nd gear and it was gentle enough not to bite too hard. A good balance between grip and power.
Although I have to admit the S is even more fun with the added power.

with Zero.

This was the main reason that I was always a bit disappointed with the Subaru. It's such an incredibly capable car but you'd be hard pushed to get any sliding action at road speeds.

I am far too scared to attempt to slide the car unless at very low speeds as I am likely to end up looking like a prat, or worse in a hedge etc

I love the rock solid feel of the S02s on fast cornering now I have more confidence in their ability to stick.

(I can't get my winter tyres to unstick at low speeds at all - even wet cobbles don't do it - sometimes thats , other times its )

Saturday was hilarious - there was so much cold, wet slime on the roads, the tyres never properly warmed up.

Slip angles/drifts on every roundabout.

I went down one C road that was appalling - I left it in 2nd, late braking, over-accelerating etc. Like a 70's rally car! (well, not quite, actually, but it felt exciting!).

Cleaned the car & got it filthy in the space of a couple of hours.
