Was discussing a few of the points raised on here with one of the Fella's at work today (our current engine test Guru with 10 years on engine development). Pretty much agrees with everything we've been saying on this subject.

Only thing he disagreed with was something I hinted at in one of my coments but didn't push at because I wasn't entirely certain when you spoke about the different frequency of knock produced with different grade fuels.

The way he explained it to me is the frequency the knock sensor looks at is govered by the shape of the block/crankshaft vibration/Rod and piston motion etc. This means that the frequency of the knock will always be the same as long as you don't change any of those parts (I've had to do engine testing before after we changed counterweights on Crankshafts before)

I'm sure that's a big part of it. The biggest problem as I understand it, is getting the filtering right ECU side on the signal from the knock sensor. The knock sensor is only really a microphone after all - it picks up all sorts.
