Default Question for the tyre Guru - Bassoctopus

Just looking through the tyre discussions - need new rears and just wondered why 245/45/16s are recomended over the size for S02s (225/50/16). Something to do with rain channels, contact patch...

Anyway saw this quote:

"The second problem is that from a performance perspective the stock rims are not wide enough for 245 tyres. The tyres will bulge, resulting in less crisp turn it and wobbly steering"

Is this a big issue if going for Toyo T1Rs? And assuming relatively normal driving how long should rears (T1Rs) last?

Cheers.

I've got Toyo's on the S and they've been there for nearly 18 months and 15-20k miles and still going strong. Not sure what the previous owner was like, but don't think he was a Sunday driver either. Fronts seem to be wearing though, but not sure when they went on (imagine the same time).

Contact patch! The 225 S02s have a lot of rubber and not much in the way of rain channels.

You will notice softer sidewalls if you go for Toyo T1Rs but I think that most people with them use 34-36psi.

How long will they last? No idea, I am not the best person to give advice on this.

I ran 36 psi on my Tokos and nearly bounced off the road Mind you, I have 17" rims and a suspension set up which changes on a weekly basis

(currently (yet to be driven!) compression: approx 40% from full soft all four corners; rebound: 8 clicks from full soft on rear, 10 clicks form full soft on front)

Thanks Paper Lawyer. But what the heck does this mean: "10 clicks form full soft on front". I suspect there's a typo in there but it still doesn't help!!!

Just to complete your answers - 245s will fit on stock rear wheels, I ran them for 2 years as have many others on here. The less crisp turn in is from the softer side wall, which can be slightly resolved by inflating the tyres up another couple of psi.

My Eagles lasted 15k on the back, and I removed the fronts at the same time as they stopped making the rears.

I'm now back on S02s, although I would be using Toyos if I used my car daily and/or through the winter.

Craig please start a new "blog" for you daily suspension changes, it should help put me off going any more complicated

Back on topic - whatever one else has already pointed out

15-20k for a set of rears? I don't even get that from the fronts!
