Default Replacement gearbox - options

Gearbox has been diagnosed (by Tom at TGM) with a bearing going Apparently it could last a couple of months or a couple of years! However that was about 3 months ago and the whine appears to have turned into almost a slight rattle. I think I should do something soon rather than wait for it to go completely and catch me out.

As Yoshi is an old boy and on 135K miles I don't want to spend a fortune and Tom had suggested a 2nd hand gearbox (I think Honda new about 2k??). I'm a bit dubious about second hand as it's obviously going to be costly in fitting so worried about the fact it could go again.

Anyone got any advice (best place to source, aftermarket - if that's poss etc) If anyone has had it done, approx cost, I can't remember what Tom said but think it was about 5 hours work?

Roll it down to mine and we can change it here - but you will have to wait until I have my engine hoist back next month!

Could be a nice refresher as I have to change the clutch on my winter weeble soon as well

Of course.. if you are sensible you'll wait til I've done the weeble as it has been a few years since I did a gearbox last

hmmm tempting - not a job I'd particularly want to do myself but I suspect with your expertise it could be interesting Obviously we'd have to finish it in a day, it wouldn't work well with the hangovers

Oh crikey yes, I'd forgotten about that small detail! Best drive down on the day we are going to get cracking on it then! Ouch!

Mine went about 3 or 4 years ago, and then Honda said £4000. I didn't even ask if that included fitting (or VAT).

I think I paid £450 for an 04 20,000 mile gearbox from a breaker (at least that's what they said). Plus another £400 ish for a new clutch, which is a pretty good idea, and it ended up about £1500 all in with labour.

It's been fine ever since. In fact I've done more miles on my second gearbox than was done on the first.

You'd be taking a risk getting it repaired, and buying a new one is obviously silly, so a breakers with a 3 month warranty is probably about the best you can do.

Hmmm. Mines in at TGM at the moment for a new gearbox and clutch. Mine developed a noise about a month or so ago (see https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/976...#entry21994462)
I purchased a 2004 gearbox off integrastella, and expect an update shortly on fitting/resolution.

Maybe we should compare notes?

Got a 50k miles box from an 04 in my garage, and happy to fit if you'll travel to Essex I've done more S clutch and box changes than I'd care to count!
